Captain Pike's landing party prepares to beam down to Talos lV in the first Star Trek pilot, The Cage.
I love the production and costume design of The Cage and the second pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before. You could see that the production was going for a futuristic, yet grounded, look.
This is probably based on the production team's experiences in the military during World War ll or the Korean War. The US military influences are seen in coveralls the transporter technicians are wearing, which call to mind similar attire in the US Navy; the military-issue eyeglasses (what we used to kiddingly call "birth control glasses") the second technician is wearing; and the field jackets and web belts the landing party wear.
Another bit that I also love are the ball-point pen and paper the man with the eyeglasses (identified in some sources as Sam Yamata) is using.
Yes, in real life we now routinely use technology that is far beyond or equal to many things in the pilots: cell/smart phones, computer tablets, smart watches, earbuds, etc. But they don't match the charm of the technology that made it to the screen back in The Cage and WNMHGB.
