[A video. Do you want to watch it?]
Research Team Bridgerunners carefully walked into the Dungeon. It was so new that it didn’t have a name, and was covered in fog.
The Observatory was just up ahead; its open-air structure called to the team, its light and fresh air being a welcome reprieve from the dark and muggy enclosed Rooms.
Tien bowed as if to welcome them in.
“This place… I name it Overseeing-of-Zenith.”
Shallahi considered the name for a second, and nodded.
Fae still looked like a mess, after everything. Not even Maddie’s claws could stop her fur from getting dirty and matted, and it still had eyebags from fitful sleep.
Not that Maddie could reach her, considering Rose’s situation.
And that isn’t even mentioning how much the battles earlier had worn her and faer Team out!
“That’s… a name, certainly,” Luxio said.
“It’s not as bad as ‘Tower of Time,’ at least,” Joltik remarked while sitting on Shallahi’s head.
Both Cryogonal and Snowflake chided the team.
As they all walked to the main platform, the Unown shivered before speaking in a voice not her own.
As the light dims, the lenses of the Observatory seemed to move on their own, making minor corrections to their positions.
Joltik broke the unnerved silence: “There’s a prophecy about this, you know.”
Luxio turned to her, questioningly.
‘When Sun and Moon cross their paths, a New Queen will be crowned, and a New Age of Enlightenment shall be born.’”
HALF-SUN, HALF-MOON. THE CORONATION NEARS.
The lenses stopped moving, their positions seemingly finalised. The main structure started tracking the sun, refracting and reflecting its light down upon a still pool. But the lenses were out of place.
“We’re putting those back together, for certain.”
The team worked steadily to move the massive arms into their rightful places.
THE FULL MOON COMES FORTH TO CLAIM ITS SOLAR CROWN.
As the Corona formed around the moon, Eclipse-Light shone down upon the pool, blackening it with its darkness. The Telescope focused the black further, and the pool rippled ever so slightly.
FULL MOON, MAY YOUR COMING REIGN BE FRUITFUL!
The water started reacting further, slowly but noticeably becoming disturbed, rippling from the center outwards.
THE FULL MOON NOW BEARS THE CROWN OF SOLAR RADIANCE!
The water rose in the Eclipse-Light, and then fell, the dark waves evenly filling the negative-carvings in the stone floor.
It rose and fell, rose and fell, rose and fell…
ALL HAIL THE DARK QUEEN, BEYOND THE REACH OF THE TWINS OF HONOR!
The water in the pool rose one last time and formed into a shape with great wings.
ALL HAIL THE DARK QUEEN, BEYOND THE GRASP OF ETERNITY!
The shape became Lunala, Queen of Moonlight.
Lunala, Queen of Darkness.
Lunala, Queen of a New Age.
ALL HAIL THE DARK QUEEN, WHO SHALL ENLIGHTEN THE WORLD WITH KNOWLEDGE!
And something rose from within the pool. A form, small and humanoid, with twin tails.
YOUR REGENT OF KNOWLEDGE SHALL NO LONGER SUFFER BENEATH HIS PRISON!
Uxie, shivering with his eyes closed, hugging itself as water dripped from his form.
Shallahi took a step back, lowering her head and shivering ever so slightly.
Seekers of Knowledge, Chasers of Memory…
As you leave this place, may your memories be returned as thanks.”
The Team bunched together in shock.
After the fight they’d been through, they had expected only more conflict.
Lunala spoke next, framed familiarly against the pillars and great lens behind her.
“YOU WHO BORE MY TRUE CROWN HERE;
THE CROWN NOT OF SUNLIGHT, BUT OF BONDS, OF HOPE AND GRIEF AND LOVE.
BONDS LIKE THOSE I ONCE CARRIED AS I ROAMED WITH THE SHATTERED ONE.
RADIANT LUXRAY, CRYPTIC UNOWN…
SHALLAHI, SNOWFLAKE, KINDRED SPIRITS TO MY OWN HEART…
AS YOU LEAVE THIS PLACE, MAY YOU RETURN TO YOUR HOME IN PEACE.”
The Team shook, but didn’t falter. They were awed by this show of mercy.
“Something’s fishy here...”
“I AM QUEEN OF A NEW AGE…
BUT ONLY FOR A HEARTBEAT.
THE ECLIPSE IS WHAT STARTS IT.
AN END AND A BEGINNING, TIED TOGETHER.”
“LEAVE IN PEACE, O BEARERS OF MY CROWN.”
“Leave in peace, O Breakers of My Chains.”
The deities bowed farewell, and left.
And when Team Moonlight returned to camp, they had two less Teammates than when they had started.
