Grandma insisted on no politics or religion At the table before praying to Jesus – We all started laughing at the irony Words flew back and forth, Sharon saying That not talking about politics is what Leads to every problem in the world And we could have rational discourse Before the wine got served but Ed Made the crass joke about cannibalism and Christianity as though it was a new one And Uncle Tony – every family has one – Made comments about foreign devils As though his ancestors weren’t those And became the turkey we trimmed With every nasty truth we knew – And grandma said this proved her right But grandpa said she hadn’t been right Since she’d voted for You Know Who And Jenny asked if that was Voldemort And everything fell apart then Into a glorious shambles saved Only by Tony being thrown out And told to give thanks elsewhere

In Place
Perhaps I have another chance turn at this life
To sift through the crowds each new day and night
My eyes are to weary to see in this place
I forgot what it means to take up this space
My life work this may be as the end seems so near
Will I be remembered for love pity or fear
Lessons appear to release loss in this case
I make mistakes too it's hard to keep pace
Hours I spent to write it all down
Press of the button then it is gone
I flowed and I wrote and sang and I danced
I thought I had answers but questions enhance
Perhaps I thought wrong too write all along
Hoping for clarity feels like cryptic song
It all tied together so neat in this bow
Now I sigh and ripple in this new lowest low
Divine inspiration so close at last
Destroyed in the fire of moments past
Can't reverse the course it's due indeed
Should have known better because I can read
All signs point to nowhere while I travel in place
And return to nothing that I still face
Can't recreate the moment can't forget the past
Just moving forward until we must last
There is no further mountain or ocean to cross
Just sentimentality for what I have lost
Can we sing to each other a tune short and sweet
Can we lie on our backs and rest our feet
So weary I am from travel for days
I'm sure it's whats keeping me from sleeping in haze
The thoughts come and go no turning back
There's a lion beside me on the attack
The king and queen rejoice in their love
The jester sees truth because he's above
So what if this poem sucks a big ass
It's ok if you hate me - it's all I ask
Where do souls coincide in this place or that
Where does love exist so big and so vast
Hoping you can save me from myself
I stand on the edge of this giant shelf
No truth in meaning and meaning in truth
If I could recreate the lessons I learned in my youth
I might see the light and keep darkness at bay
But dusk creeps in each new dying day
And dawns shows the light that I dreamt in this place
And people I knew don't recognize my face
The beauty of people is that they love to share
Unless of course their hurt battered and scared
I hold and embrace you and soften the blow
The reflection of me is where you can go
In your eyes I see the next full circle era
The next phase like strong soft supple leather
I'm lost and confused and wandering aloud
Don't confuse solace with acting too proud
The ancients they taught us that life is too long
Because we toil and sweat to create what we think strong
But nothing is permanent and don't get used to the dream
It's all controlled beyond freedoms so no longer dream free
I fester I think I practice too much
I'm lazy and lacking a disciplined touch
Shattered and crumbling needing rest from the tide
Seeking meaning in lows and truth within highs
