Half A Cup - Unpuzzle

Sometimes you’re not in the mood for a full cup of tea. You’re in a hurry; you’re not that thirsty. When it comes to games, sometimes you can’t give them an entire review complete with a full set of terrible jokes. But you still want to say something. So you pour Half A Cup. In theory, Unpuzzle should represent the absolute worst part of putting a puzzle together. You’ve lined up all the corners, connected the edges and filled in the middle. Now you’re staring proudly at a giant picture of a German train station or whatever, you take a quick snap and now you’ve got to to demolish the whole thing. So you mess it around and try to pull apart the two pieces that have decided to form a life together without damaging or losing either of them. An odd thing to make a game out of then but Unpuzzle has proven itself to be a chilled and relaxed little puzzle game.

As the name suggests, you’re pulling apart puzzles. You start with just a couple of conjoined pieces and you have to pull them in the correct direction so they can fly off the screen. Get all of the pieces off the screen and you win the puzzle. From there, Unpuzzle sets out to complicate things. Not content with filling the screen with pieces, it also pulls tricks like putting a timer before certain pieces unlock or, perhaps most challenging, linking together two unconnected pieces so they move together. As you can’t move a piece through another piece (instead it gets blocked) you have to go in the exact order the game wants you to.

That’s what kind of defines Unpuzzle. It’s not particularly difficult in any sense; it’s not going to wrack your brains and haunt your dreams. Instead, the challenge is in finding that one little loose thread that you can pull to unravel the whole thing. As you start out with basic pieces, it’s easy to find. Look for a piece that only has one connection and pull it away. When the level’s get tougher, though, finding that free piece turns into a game of Where’s Wally. It rarely feels frustrating though, perhaps due to the chilled atmosphere it exudes.  It’s clean, white graphics and laid back music do wonders for that.

Unpuzzle goes on for fifty puzzles, which grow increasingly complex as time goes on but it’s something you could knock out in an hour or so. It’s a segment of chilled out puzzle games - something I’ve grown fond of after long, bad days at work. In essence it’s the same sort of feeling as putting together a puzzle. It’s not difficult - in the traditional sense at least - but it’s calming and there’s this feeling of achievement that’s hard to place. Unpuzzle is simple but wears its simplicity on its sleeve.
