Unreal

This. This video inspired me to start another play-through of Unreal. How many times have I beaten the game? 20? 30? I’ve lost count. I’ve played this game countless number of times yet I’m still drawn to it. I have so many memories attached to this game. So many emotions and feelings. This video reminded me of what I love most about the game. The pumping 90s electronic soundtrack, the gorgeous landscapes, the fast as fuck gameplay.
Sure the graphics look dated compared to today’s standard but 15 years back it looked all so real. Vortex Rikers felt so claustrophobic and the moment you step out of the crashed ship into the gorgeous and empty Na-Pali village, you are in awe. The vast plain in front of you, skies with two suns above you, huge alien mountain peaks in the horizon. It’s so surreal and breathtaking. This has to be one of my favorite moment in gaming. It did not take fancy cutscenes or use of camera angles to grab the players attention, you feel it all while in control of your character. This is how shit needs to be done these days.
Damn I remember it all, how the game progresses. The enemy placement, the weapon and pickup placements, the sequence of the levels, the translator entries. I remember everything. There is only one thing I wish for. It’s to forget it all so I can play it all once again, go in blind and be awe struck once again.
brb installing unreal.
what did prisoner 849 get into SPACE PRISON for?
It’s never really specified.
If you want my own personal interpretation, though, there’s a few things to consider.
1: The future of Unreal is pretty much a cyberpunk dystopia. The worlds are ruled by corporations, corruption runs frequent in the ranks, it’s not a nice and pretty place. In dystopias, the laws are very frequently bent and broken in order for mega-conglomerates to dominate.2: Gina has a complete disregard for authority, putting her at odds in a world dominated by authorities.3: Gina is not only familiar with weapons, but very skilled. She’s smart and resourceful enough to take completely unfamiliar alien tech and use it against their own masters—even better than the Troopers that use them, in fact.4: As she’s on the Vortex Rikers transport heading to SPACE PRISON, they clearly don’t want her on Earth—either because of how dangerous she is or because of what she tried to do.
Together, what these say to me is that she was either a rebel or a soldier, fighting for a cause that failed and getting rounded up for it—probably a pawn in corporate warfare that grew to resent the politics in business suits backstabbing each other. I assume either she got too good at it and had to be disposed of, or she tried to do a direct strike against a CEO and failed, or her backers all dissolved and left her empty-handed.
Or maybe she was caught jaywalking or something.
