You don’t need to go as far as other movies to find a good example of redemption and change. M'gann is right there in the same show, she was raised a genocidal monster, she chose to do good and went back to her planet to try to change things even though she isn’t a princess, has no power or influence and will likely get her killed.

I completely agree. M’gann is ABSOLUTELY the best example of a redemption arc within the show. However, I use those three films in particular as examples of what I call the “Fuckboy to (Romantic) Hero Trope.” Something M’gann actually doesn’t fall into because does not count as a fuckboy, for a few obvious reasons. But Mon-El does, for a LOT of obvious reasons. M’gann gets the actual redemption arc within like 7 episodes that they have YET to give Mon-El.

Hey! To @ihaveathingformeninwaistcoats? This is actually a really good counter example to your argument that a redemption arc in a TV show has to take forever in order to be considered good. M’gann had fewer episodes than Mon-El did before she got written off and her redemption arc was pretty well done by the end. 

But her story’s a little different. Because she wasn’t unlearning bad behavior in this arc. She’d ALREADY learned it before we ever met her, that’s the whole reason she’s actually ON Earth. So, in a way, you could argue that her story is NOT a redemption arc because she sort-of had it already, before she even gets introduced. What happens is, as an article I read called it, a healing arc. She has fully accepted her responsibility in the atrocities that happened to the Green Martians and feels an immense amount of guilt about it. You could also call this a forgiveness arc, instead of a redemption arc. Because the story is ultimately about M’gann, through J’onn, learning to forgive herself and heal from all the pain and guilt she’s been feeling for two hundred years. And her arc ends when she goes back to Mars to try to change minds among the White Martians. She can’t undo what the massacre of the Green Martians. She can’t bring any of them back. What she CAN do is exactly what she DOES do. She protects the last Green left against her own people, including her husband. And then she goes back to try to change minds with the White Martians to make sure what happened with the Greens never happened again, if she can help it.

Mon-El comes to Earth still an arrogant dudebro and has to unlearn everything he’s learned. He has to fix himself somehow through seeing everyone else be better people. He still REQUIRES redemption, which is why his story would take longer. But it’s certainly not done NEARLY as well as M’gann’s story is done and I have argued more than once that this is exactly why Mon-El is a redundant, unnecessary character. Because there are other characters on the show who literally serve EXACTLY the same purpose and who do it better. In every position you put him in, someone else could do it better. You name it: love interest, redemption arc, show off Kara’s prejudice problems, bring in/have connection to season’s Big Bad, be a catalyst for Kara’s issues with her unfulfilled purpose as Kal-El’s protector. Someone else does it better. 

So why is Mon-El still on the show again? Oh that’s right. Because he’s a basic attractive straight white boy. That’s literally it.

I mean, how is that guy a fan favorite?? He’s so grating, and they started changing his characterization radically from season 2 onward, which just annoyed me more.

Dawn, i love, because, she has kept true to her character thus far. She’s scary but she’s also hurting, and caring.

Joel is too one dimensional so far, and i know he gets arcs that give him depth, but fuck i already hate him irrationally, I’m going to keep at it

it's so great to come back to your blog with news that you'll be continuing your story soon! I may be insistent with you, but I'm very persnickety, so to find an author that writes *exactly* how I like it makes me so happy. And also your story also manages to strike a perfect balance between being angsty, without forgetting to be fun and have light moments, not making the protagonist suffer all the time, but also not let us forget her pain. It's a ff reference I'm glad you had fun in Europe btw!

Hi, yes, the Clexa vs. shoot war sucks. At the beginning it was (some) clexans being annoying, now 100s of posts calling them out, you know how tumblr gets, someone does something and suddenly lots of posts appear saying the same thing. It will die out in a couple of days, I think everyone already got the hint. In the meantime, I think the best way to end the "war" is to go back to posting about shoot in the tag and ignoring the drama, which is what I'm doing. Have a good rest!!

I’m sure it will die down eventually, I just hope it’ll be before too much damage has already been done. honestly I really wasn’t trying to start anything, I mean it, I’m just sick of all the drama. and then the drama came to me. hopefully in a few days a new promo or something will come out, and then the tag will be full of that instead. but we’re not there yet.
