Biafra, officially the Republic of Biafra, was a secessionist state in Nigeria, that existed from 30 May 1967 to January 1970, comprising the former Eastern Region of the country. It was roughly bounded by the lower part of the Niger river on the west and Cameroon on the east, and took its name from the Bight of Biafra, the Atlantic bay to its south.
