Chapter One: Layton
Waves crash ashore, sparkling like a diamond in the light. If you were to gaze ahead, it seemed vast and never ending as if it continued forever. It seemed terrifying, the thought of being lost in an endless blue void. Yet it seemed so inviting, the temptation to jump in and be carried away.
“Layton! Grab your board and let’s go!”
Layton suddenly snapped out of the trance she was in. “Coming!” She said, grabbing her surfboard from out of the sand. Layton had always been intrigued by the ocean, even when she was a little girl. She was originally from Tofino in British Columbia, Canada, right next to the Pacific. However, her mother made the decision to move down south and now here she was at a beach not so far away from Sacramento. Sure it could be a bit of a drive sometimes, but Layton would take the trip anyways to be by something she cherished deeply.
“Cmon Layton, I’ve seen some pretty big waves so far and I want to see if we can catch some!” her younger brother, Leif stood by the shore impatiently holding his surfboard.
“Yes, Leif I’m coming! Seriously have some patience…” Leif rolled his eyes and ran out towards the water, Layton following shortly behind. By the time they had set up their boards, a wave started to form and they began paddling. The waves grew taller over time, carrying them along. Layton stood up on her board and began moving herself around. Leif wanted to outshine her and attempted to do a trick of sorts. Of course, that backfired and he was flung off on his board.
Layton was still on her board, cackling hard at Leif’s failed trick “Dumbass!!”
“Cmon Layton! That wasn’t funny!” Leif had said, trying to swim ashore with his board. Finally the wave died down and Layton began making her way out of the water.
Leif went up and smacked Layton on the back of the head, Layton however, wasn’t hurt by this at all. She continued to subtly laugh at him while taking her wetsuit off. Leif’s frown deepened and he just looked like a pouting toddler instead of a 14 year old boy.
Both of them managed to get their wetsuits off and threw them back into the swim bag. Layton walked over to the little set-up they had and took out a Pepsi from the cooler before laying down on her towel to tan. She watched as Leif played around in the water, occupying himself by picking up dead crabs and jumping over waves. Layton was always the one who would watch over him. Her mother was never really the most responsible person so she’d always be the one to keep him safe and cared for. Oftentimes she’d question her mother about why she’d have another child if she barely took care of the first one but her mother never gave a clear response. It was shrugged off and Layton was left confused. But she loved Leif and she was glad to have at least one caring family member, even if he was seen as nothing by her mother. She was proud of him and he could rely on her.
She looked up at the sky, the sun gleaming down on her before looking down at her body. Normally, she was already really tan, but in the summer she just got darker. She had a nice physique to top it all off, large muscles, tall, long legs and a larger bust size. Her brown hair almost looked golden when the sun beamed down at just the right angle. She had seen many commercials and advertisements about ways to change your appearance such as adding pigmentation to the eyes. But she never really fell for those kinds of fashion trends. She’d prefer to keep her appearance as it is.
The sun was beginning to set, making the sky have a gorgeous orange tint to it that reflected onto the water. It was beautiful and Layton wished she could stay forever, but she knew she needed to go home soon before it was too late. She got off of her towel and ran over to Leif.
“Hey buttface, we’ve gotta go now. It’s getting late.”
Leif frowned “first of all, quit calling me that. Second of all, do we have to go now?”
Layton sighed and nodded, Leif reluctantly following her to their setup to put things away. They packed all of their belongings into bags and dragged them to Layton’s Mustang. When she was 16, she was able to pick a car for her birthday. Despite her family being quite wealthy, she chose not to get a super expensive car and picked an older Mustang instead. She loved it anyway.
They attached their boards to the roof of the car and threw the rest of the stuff in the backseat. Leif slumped into the front seat and Layton got into the driver's seat. She started the engine and began driving off.
“Man, we’ve gotta go to Lake Tahoe again one of these days…”
Leif was already asleep, so she didn’t really have anyone to talk to. But then again, she enjoyed the silence quite a lot.
“...Never mind.”
One of the things she missed about still living on Vancouver Island was being way closer to actual beaches. Her hometown Tofino was right at the edge of the island, so she was always close to the water. There were quite a few other places she’d go to as well such as Ucluelet which wasn’t very far from Tofino. However, these memories were quite distinct since she lived there when she was quite young.
The drive home felt quite long because of traffic, but after a long while they made it home. Layton always found Sacramento quite pretty when the skyline was lit up at night. Finally they arrived at their house, but the lights seemed to be off. Their mother was most likely not home. She turned off the car and shook Leif awake.
As they made their way into the house, Layton realized her assumptions were right. Leif however, wasn’t aware of this and seemed confused.
“Lay? Where’s mother?”
“Probably out drinking, Leif.”
“Right. Well it’s not like we care anyways.” Leif tried sounding careless, but he really just wanted his mother’s love.
Layton walked deeper into their large house. Yes, being wealthy was a privilege, but many responsibilities came with it, she had to deal with these herself because her mother obviously wouldn’t. Eventually she made it to her room. It was tidied and clean, definitely a contrast to other parts of the house. She flopped onto her bed, embracing the warmth and comfort it brought and scrolled on her phone. She knew she needed to cut down on the doom scrolling, but it was one of the only ways to keep her distracted from the other chaos in her life. She looked up from her phone for a moment, her attention directed to the backpack in the corner of her room. School was starting up again and she’d be graduating this year. She wasn’t too sure what she was gonna do with her life yet, maybe she’d become a more professional volleyball player? Or she’d study marine biology? It was a lot to think about and she didn’t like it.
It was getting even later now, so she hobbled out of bed and changed into her silk pajamas before heading to the bathroom. She peered at her face in the mirror, the skin was clear and had no acne. She’d often get compliments on her complexion and beauty, especially at school and volleyball games. After quickly attending to her skincare, she flopped back into bed. She tried to stay awake on her phone for a bit longer, but exhaustion overcame her and she crashed immediately.
Dreaming. She was told once as a child that she needed to quit with her foolish dreams and focus on reality. But, what would we be like without them? Everyone has dreamt at least once. They are almost crucial for physical and mental well-being as well as processing thoughts and feelings particularly emotionally. So she never stopped.
Yes it seemed foolish but she didn’t care.
