This iconic image captured by Richard Lasher shows his abandoned Ford Pinto and dirt bike on a road heading toward the volcano just as it erupted. Recognizing the extreme danger, Lasher abandoned his car, unloaded the motorcycle, and managed to escape at full speed, surviving the disaster.

Sweating Sickness was a mysterious illness that was documented in England between 1485 and 1551. It predominantly afflicted wealthy men in their 30s and 40s, leading to death within hours after the symptoms appeared.
