UP 3985 headed north up the CSX shortline for Cincinnati with the annual Christmas train that was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the event. Louisville, KY November 16, 1992
i return with more ratw bullshit this time with up's steam giants: "Big Boy" 4014 on the top, "Challenger" 3985 in the middle and "Living Legend" 844 being carried by the challenger themselves you can't tell me it's not them when they're bored out of their damn minds (and since challenger basically has nothing to do because they're retired... what else can they do?)

Not So Long Ago by Joe McMillan Via Flickr: Friday, July 19, 2002: not so long ago, but many changes since. The three Ski Train F40s are in their second year and are in position for the weekend Summer Ski Train run to the mountains the next day. and now, the final (former, sadly.) member of up's steam giants!
when 3985 first arrived on the Union Pacific, they were actually pretty chipper and quite the optimistic Guider. but after the events of Dieselization and being out of service for a while which then led to their eventual retirement. over that period of time, they became more quiet and reclusive. not to mention they've drifted from their only sibling (3977) quite a bit. despite all this, they got by with Legend and the other Heritage Guiders' support. although they're... not as cheerful or optimistic nowadays, they're still seen as one of Union Pacific's legendary steam Guiders.
questions about ratw are always appreciated!!
drew a little thing for an art show in one of my classes
i am REALLY PROUD of how Challenger came out, the other two came out alright but i'm still happy with the result regardless.

UP 3985 - AMTK Train #1 "Sunset Limited"
Lake Charles, LA June 2, 2004
The "Clinchfield 676" at dawn on the Friday of the 50th anniversary Santa Claus Special weekend. Two items were on the agenda- fix the twisted running board (above the fireman's side front cylinder) and wye the engine. The first task was completed, but the 4-10-0 pedestal tender wasn't able to negotiate the wye, so the engine had to be pulled backwards to Shelbiana, KY, after dark. Kingsport, TN November 20, 1992
