getting out of the house to spend some time with karen was warranted. after all, with how crazy the last three months had been they hadn't seen too much of each other. but that was changing now, she was coming over and the two of them were going to have a night catching up. on the way she stopped at a liquor store and grabbed a six pack as well as a bottle of wine for karen. they had been sitting at the kitchen table for well, she honestly didn't even know how long and the room was filled with laughter and memories. ❝ maybe we should order a pizza, does that not sound amazing right now? ❞

it wasn't just karen that max appreciated for letting her stay there, mike, nancy, holly - the whole crew. they really took her in and made her feel like she was cared for in a way she hadn't in a familial setting since she was a young girl. while everyone else was busy she took to making dinner for everyone, a favorite of her own that she hoped they would all enjoy. penne vodka, something she had from california before she moved that stuck with her ever since. that and a batch of monkey bread. ❝ seems you're the first one home wheeler. i made some dinner. just something my mom and i really enjoyed over the years. especially the monkey bread, its addicting.❞

Hey, Wheeler. Honestly? I'm glad you're in California right now, at least someone is safe and away from all of this shit. You're there with El, Will and the rest of the Byers which is good. It makes me happy you'll all be far away from this and that El will have you to lean on. Enough of that though; I just want to thank you for the friendship we have built over the years. Some might say an unlikely duo, I say a badass alliance. I see us like Spider-Man and Wolverine. Anyway, you have always been someone I can go to when I need to turn my brain off, when I needed a good laugh or distraction and I never told you but it has always meant the world to me. Not to mention when things have gotten grim, you have been the heart of the group and that is something i've never forgotten. Especially all that happened with Billy. Even though I constantly give you shit, don't ever change Mike. Promise me that. Also maybe promise me you'll just stay in California and never leave.. or at least just not return to Hawkins. Take care of yourself and everyone else for me? Especially Lucas, he is going to need you.

things were settled down enough that she could step out and go see karen. joyce was feeling regretful that she hadn't been able to sooner, but things were at least for the moment, somewhat calm enough for her to go see her friend. a bouquet of roses were bought at the hospital gift shop before heading up to the room number given to her by one of the kids, she couldn't tell you which. knocking softly before she entered the room, a small smile picked at her lips before she set the arrangement down on a nearby flat surface. ❝ lets brighten it up a little in here for you. ❞ walking over, she pulled the curtains to allow a little sun in, pulling the canvas bag from her shoulder and pulling out a few magazines as well as some nail polish she managed to get from karens room at the wheeler house. ❝ figured i could paint your nails and toes for you, we could do some trash mags. take it back to the 60s? ❞
