5 Ways Iskolars Can Enjoy the ‘Byaheng Forever’

While the University of the Philippines offers dorms for staying-in students, some Iskolars still prefer to go home and travel every day.

Whether you drive your car, ride the public transportation, or are driven to school, one thing is mutual -- all commuters hurdle the Metro traffic. (Take note: to ‘commute’ means to ‘travel’ in whatever form).

Just as how fast UP students can relate to “hugot lines,” they, too, are able to create innovative solutions to situations.

So don’t worry if you’re stuck on the road. Here are 5 ways an Isko/Iska can be productive and maximize the Byaheng Forever: 1. ‘Wag ka mag-iiwan ng dapat mong dala. 

Even if we have already estimated our travel time, no one knows what we may encounter along the way -- car collisions, protest, sudden floods, or even your vehicle’s unpredicted engine failure. So make sure to bring along your readings or your audio books. Read while you wait everything to get fixed.  At least, although you can no longer wait and you feel you’re already more than late, you’ve stored new information you can later on use.

2. Isa-isa lang, para ‘di ka nahihirapan. 

Instead of worrying over the static traffic and getting anxious of being late, why not reflect on the last relevant lecture you’ve had or create in your head a to-do-list while putting up back-up plans. When you contemplate, focus on one thought at a time. Sometimes, thinking of many things leads more to confusion. A relaxed mind is more able to absorb and process new ideas, leading one to be more productive. Remember, a productive body starts with a productive mind. 

3. Hindi ibig sabihing nagpapahinga ay mahina na. 

Admit it or not -- since you entered college and since you studied at UP, sleep has been like “gold.” So if you pulled off an all-nighter, leave early for school and get a power nap while you travel if you are able (unless of course if you’re driving your car: don’t sleep!). But this is to assume you take all the safety precautions of sleeping in the Jeepney and MRT/LRT (as the reminder says, don’t leave your belongings unattended). Our bodies are like machines -- they’ll give up if they are not well-maintained. Power naps are great ways of recharging us from exhaustion. 

4. Alagaan mo sarili mo, wala siya lagi dyan para ka bantayan. 

Yes, just like trying to sleep, an Iska/Isko must never forget to take care to eat -- and nobody can really take that responsibility. Because yes, you’ve heard this a thousand times: we need to eat. Our bodies need fuels to heat us up. Have you ever seen a car running without gas? Utilize the travel time to chew your breakfast. When was even the last time you ate in the morning? So go, grab a sandwich and savor them while stuck on the road; getting healthy is also being productive. But remember to take into consideration that if you are riding a PUV, you have fellow passengers who might get teased and distracted by what you eat. Be a responsible eater, Iskolar!

5.  Palagi kang mag-plano muna, mahirap ‘pag hindi handa. 

But every soldier who comes to war must still bring his ammunition. Every commuter must learn how to prepare for the worst. Check the weather updates, follow the MMDA and HPG’s Twitter accounts for live traffic feeds. Make sure your engine is on good condition. Familiarize your Jeepney’s alternative routes. Know the LRT-MRT schedule. And yes, allot time for the long queues. Still, nothing beats a well-planned trip.

It is not to say, of course, that we’ll forever just have to live with the ‘trapik’ because we all want improvement and change. But while there is no permanent solution to this systemic problem yet, we Iskos and Iskas  must be practical and turn our problems into answers. Who knows, in your next ‘Byaheng Forever,’ you might meet your ‘forever!’ ###

UP has always been known for its high involvement in national, political, and economic undertakings. One of the concrete manifestations of this involvement is the practice of activism within its bounds, which is a characteristic often associated with UP. It is even said that the university’s student political affairs may well be deemed as a microcosm of national politics (Abinales, 1992). Its standing as a leading academic foundation of the country earned its activism dynamics a national significance.

  1950s

-          1950s: A faction formed between UP’s two major activist forces, the Greek-lettered fraternities and the Catholic group associated with the UP Student Catholic Action (UPSCA) (Abinales, 1992).

-          “From the time I entered UP in 1956 up to 1959, there was mass apathy among the students.” (Sison, 2008)

-          1959: The Student Cultural Association of the University of the Philippines (SCAUP) was organized with cultural nationalism as their battle cry.

  1960s

-          1962:  Students showed their disapproval of the appointment of Carlos P. Romulo as UP President through demonstrations and counter-demonstrations led by the Student Union and the UPSCA, respectively (Epistola, 1985).

-          Mid-1960s, “Americanization” of the University was a big issue. The SCAUP, Kabataang Makabayan (KM), and University Student Council (USC) took the lead in protesting.

-          1968: Katipunang Makabansa, Kalayaan, Pagkakaisa, Samahan ng Demokratikong Kabataan (SDK), SCAUP, and KM and Partisans together with the USC and the Philippine Collegian staff were among the organizations in UP Diliman actively participated in mass protests (Epistola, 1985).

-          Before Romulo left his position as President, he asserted that student activism and faculty dissent were “in themselves important, for without them, the University of the Philippines would be nothing.” (Epistola, 1985).

  1970s

-          Students got more involved in matters concerning other members of Philippine society such as the laborers, farmers, etc.

-          1971: During the gasoline price hike a 2 day blockade through barricades was organized by students in the University Avenue. Within the barricades were teach-ins and mass meetings. (Evangelista, 1985).

-          Salvador Lopez, an ardent activist and UP President during the Marcos time, had emulated the current democratic procedures that the university is supposed to employ – “student autonomy in handling its affairs, appointments of student regents, faculty participation through “democratic consultation” in selections of department chairs and college deans, etc.” (Dalisay, 2009).

-          1970s: The heated and bloody encounter between the military and the protesters, that left hundreds injured and four students dead of gunshot wounds ignited the fire of the First Quarter Storm—a turning point in Philippine History. (Ocampo, 2012).

This is kinda disturbing. HINDI NAMAN LAHAT NG UP STUDENTS GANOON. I know Sen. Miriam is not generalizing. Hindi naman lahat ng UP students maarte at mayayabang. Hindi din naman ibig sabihin na porket subsidized ang tuition fee namin ay hindi na kami namrmroblema. Hindi pa ba sapat na example si Tejada ng UPM? Pagka ba mayaman hindi na pwede sa UP? Sabi nga hindi naman University of the Poor ang ibgsabihin ng UP. People strive to be in UP because it offers THE BEST QUALITY EDUCATION. So pag mayaman di na pwede sa best quality education?
