BNHA Redesigns That I’ll Get Around To Drawing Someday (Pt. 2)
(Tumblr ate my draft D:)
For context, here is the introduction from Part 1.
[So I had a comic idea about Hatsume creating an entire Powerpoint presentation for a business pitch that was basically just her insulting the entire hero course’s fashion sense (because the whole class is an OSHA violation) and I’ll proooooobably get around to drawing it someday, but for now I’m just gonna record all of my ideas here.
Keep in mind this isn’t supposed to be ‘fixing’ the current designs, it’s just supposed to be a ‘Support course’ type view on them. I think the current designs are realistic, because they were supposed to be designed by 14-year olds and look EXACTLY like something 14-year olds would design. They also fit the personalities of their owners very well, even if they aren’t the most aesthetic.
Some things that will be automatically added to all of the designs (unless stated otherwise) are kneepads, elbowpads, and protective vests/crotch protection (please for the love of God give them crotch protection. Deku especially - I don’t think he can handle another kick to his privates). They’ll be tailored to fit the aesthetic or hidden under clothes, of course.
The main material used will be borophene. It’s a really thin, flexible material that has a high conductivity of electricity (x). It’s also supposed to be stronger than graphene, which is 200 times stronger than steel (x). At the moment, borophene is a difficult material to make, but considering that My Hero Academia is set in the future and has access to Quirks like Yaomomo’s, they could probably find a way to mass produce it. Of course, the hero suits won’t use it exclusively - more likely it will be layered below the fabric or incorporated into it somehow. But considering how much damage these suits have to go through, I think it should be present.]
(It’s also noteworthy that the material chosen was just for making the suits as indestructible as possible - it doesn’t fully protect from damage, which is why I added additional measures in some redesigns)
Now, lets get onto the actual redesigns!
Ochako Uraraka
Aesthetically, Uraraka’s costume is great! She’s got a standard theme, an appealing color scheme, and a shape language that she sticks to (so I’ll try to keep the aesthetics of the costume as much as possible). For a character - awesome! For a hero - not so much.
The biggest issue with her costume is that she wears HEELS? in COMBAT? HELLO? Horikoshi’s explanation for this (from the Ultra Analysis book) is that the heels have springs in them to boost her jumps while in Zero Gravity, but that reasoning is pretty lacking since most other shoes could also do that. The soles should be replaced with astronaut-boot soles, like the type that made the footprint on the moon. They’d be thick enough to hide springs in but, since the springs are only strong enough to lift self-gravitated Uraraka, they wouldn’t affect her balance.
We could also just make them a recolored version of Hatsume’s thruster boots, because they go well with Ochako’s Quirk, but I have pretty mixed feelings about that. Realistically, balance is a four-way deal and jet-thrusters would be incredibly difficult to control; Uraraka could achieve similar results by just using her wrist-cords. But since we’ve got Bakugou defying the laws of physics over here by hovering in midair with only two ‘thrusters’, I’ll allow it.
The second issue with Ochako’s costume is pretty standard for female heroes - the torso is completely vulnerable. We can’t just stuff her in a bunch of armor like we did Yaoyorozu, because it would mess with her shapes and silhouette. The farthest wiggle room we have is adding wide belts of reinforcement - not exactly armor, but maybe a material like Kevlar - around her stomach, thighs and biceps. The stomach-piece can be connected to her existing belt, which will go all the way around her waist. In this version of the costume, the belt will be used to store extra cord for her wrist-braces. And because it does that, extra pockets can be added all over the costume - shoulder, thighs, etc. - to hold utilities like water, medicine, and snacks. For the chest and hips regions, we can add puffy padding to cushion from impact. This’ll ensure that she’s got some protection from collision, which is important considering how easily usage of her Quirk can backfire.
Also, oddly specific, but y’know the two dots on her chest? I believe that we should keep those - they’re the ‘signature’ of the original designer. You can find them on the X in Bakugou’s costume as well.
The last issue with Ochako’s costume is less of an issue and more of a blank space - her headpiece. What is it for? It’s not large enough to protect her head nor does it have a screen to protect her eyes. We know her ear canals have already been trained to resist the effects of Zero Gravity, so it can’t be for nausea prevention. The only use I can really see for it is communication. I think we should combine the new headpiece with the old one that she used to have - the frame would be that of the new headpiece, but it would have the translucent pink screen of the older one. The shape of the screen would be different, of course - I always though that the little piece of glass that hung down was kind of weird, so that would be cut off. Its color could be the dark teal that’s already on Uraraka’s costume, to look more like an astronaut helmet and pay homage to Thirteen. The new headpiece should have a comms device installed, along with an altimeter and health signals projected onto the inside of the screen. The health signals would be a little reference to how actual astronaut suits are (very bulked up on life signals devices) and let her monitor her nausea better. Additional things like a gyroscope, GPS, etc could also be added, but these are kind of hit-or-miss for me. They might clutter up her screen and would probably also make the headpiece more difficult/expensive to repair if it was broken.
In terms of support items, Ochako currently has large, circular wrist-braces with two different purposes:
1. They push on a pressure point on the inside of her wrist to reduce nausea
2. They hold thin metallic cords which they can shoot out from holes in the front.
These are already pretty awesome support items. The only change I could suggest for them is somehow extending them forward a bit (maybe adding a smooth, shovel-like extension protruding over the back of her hand), so that Uraraka can use them for close-combat as well. She’s a brawler-type fighter and, since the heavy wrist-braces usually have Zero Gravity activated on them, they don’t really provide any extra power to her attacks. But this is more of an addition rather than an improvement, since the braces are pretty good already.
Mina Ashido
Another design with zero chest support! Praise these girls and their literally weightless chests, I guess. (Also, this redesign focuses more on support items since Mina’s costume isn’t as bad as the others function-wise)
Ashido’s costume is... strange, to put it lightly. It’s kind of good and kind of horrible at the same time, but not really mundane enough to be labelled as just ‘okay’. It looks like a nightmare to animate but functionally, it works well for her since she’s already got acid to protect herself and needs a full range of movement. At the same time, it’s pretty simple visually, in terms of fashion and the amount of elements present, but the fur collar is a completely impractical decision. In short, it has a lot going on.
The first issue of it can be solved by just turning the bodysuit into a turtleneck so she can wear a freaking bra underneath. Perhaps a loose chest binder can also be sewn into the inside of the suit as well, considering how much Ashido relies on flexibility and motion in her fight style. She wouldn’t need any protection for her torso since she already has acid. However, elbow and kneepads would be beneficial, since she’s a close range fighter like Uraraka and could do some serious damage with them.
The second problem with her suit is the (apple-bottom jeans, boots with the) fur. It’s obviously impractical for someone who has a liquid emitter Quirk. Personally, I vibe with it and thinks it looks good on her, but that doesn’t stop the fact that it would be annoying to deal with in battle. Just turning it into a puffy fabric tube would be a quick fix; it would have basically the same visual effect without being illogical.
In terms of support items, Ashido has a pair of boots with holes in them that allow her to slide around on her acid without having to go barefoot. I’m assuming the soles have the same showerhead pattern as Gran Torino’s. These are pretty good items - they give her an advantage, but don’t make her stray too much from her fight style. But, considering Mina’s Quirk, there is a lot of room for additional support items that could help her.
(Obligatory Warning: do NOT touch or play around with chemicals, even if they seem safe. Superbases literally turn your flesh into soap, and you won’t even notice because the nerve signals won’t reach.)
1. Base Containers: small containers around her utility belt that hold bases in varying strength
This one is a given considering she has a dangerous, not-very-accurate Quirk. Ashido would be able to neutralize any unwanted acid using these bases. Sodium bicarbonate is the standard substance used in labs, so most of them will contain that. She could also use the containers to make acid bombs - neutralization reactions release high amounts of gas, so when they’re carried out in a closed container, the pressure will build up until it explodes.
2. Lab Safety Goggles
This item will basically substitute her mask and protect her eyes not from acid, but from other hazards. They’ll also function like swimming goggles, allowing her to see more clearly through Acidman.
3. Burn Salve and Water Bottle
The former is mostly just to treat Ashido’s skin when she overuses her Quirk. However, combined with the water bottle, it can be used to temporarily treat acid burns.
4. Utility Belt
A pretty standard heroics item - a belt with pockets to hold things like medicine, water, and snacks. Ashido’s will be wrapped fairly tightly around her waist, so that nothing falls out. This allows her storage, as limited as it is, even in a suit that prioritizes agility.
Aaaaaand, that’s Part 2! I hope you enjoyed this one, even if it was slightly shorter than the others. Images will be added soon, so please bear with me
Quick question but how would you change momo's outfit? Or anyone's that you feel need changing? You don't need to have good drawing skills :)
I’ll admit that these are a bit generic compared to some that others have done, but i did my best!! Under the cut cause it’s a bit lengthy.
I picked three to redesign, but believe me a lot of heroes need better costumes! For most of the girls, something less skin tight would be good. Hagakure would benefit from like. literally anything at all. please give kirishima and tetsutetsu some shirts.
Momo was in obvious need of a redesign (hence the blog name). Here are the notes from the page:
Sports bra + shorts
Mask and W shape
Formulas in mask
Gloves
Comfy shoes!
Belt
This gives her more room to make things, while also giving her support! I like the mask from her prototype design, and decided to add the W shape to her costume more. There’s a database with a bunch of formulas that she can access with her mask! I gave her gloves so she can handle the things she creates better, and comfy shoes for running! Her belt can hold spare snacks, emergency medical supplies, and anything else she needs!
Uraraka mentions she’s uncomfortable in her costume and that’s not good at all!! Here are the notes from the page:
Mask
Ponytail
Less bulky pressure points
Not skin tight
Belt w/pockets
No heels!
Gloves
The mask protects her eyes from debris, and also helps her locate civilians using heat signatures! Attached to it is an earpiece that she can use for communication. The ponytail was an impulse decision but it keeps her hair mostly out of the way. I always thought the pressure points were really bulky? So i tried to make them less in the way. I’m a bit of a space nerd, so i gave her a belt with three stars, like Orion!! It can hold emergency medical supplies, cuffs, and anything else she might need. Heels are awful for hero work, so i made the bottom of her boots padded with springs, for easier landing and launching. Also gloves for hand-to-hand combat!
Mina’s wasn’t too terrible, but i did her anyway!! Here are the notes from the page:
No fur
Gloves (with pH level)
Boots with holes
Not one piece
You know what’s an awful combination? Fur and acid. So i just gave her a regular vest jacket. Her gloves can read the pH level of the acid she emits, so she can adjust as needed. Her boots have holes in the bottom, so she can secrete acid without burning through her shoes. I hate one piece hero suits, so i cut it up into a shirt n shorts, and gave her a belt. Not mentioned in the notes, but I gave her goggles! Protective eyewear is important, especially when dealing with acids. I also made small tweaks to her appearance to make her seem more alien; fangs, bigger horns, pointed ears.
