Krishna Mondal's father was stabbed to death by a robber when she was still in her mother's womb. With a five-year-old son and a daughter on the way, her mother was forced into a life of prostitution. But Krishna managed to avoid her mother's fate, and works with New Light Kolkata to combat the cycle of forced prostitution. “If the story of the beginning of my life does not motivate me to fight for the rights of women and saving of young girls –– if this is not my mission in life –– I shall not be worth my salt," says Krishna, who this year was one of five Students Rebuild Award winners who received $10,000 to continue her work in the community.
