Hi! Sorry to bother you, but can you tell me what's wrong with the US dub of Asterix and Obelix? I always wondered why no one there seems to have watched it, and it seems like it might be the dubs' fault...
Alright, I’ll name a few things…- The characters’ names are changed (some may be not bad, but… the characters always get different names in different languages, why make it more confusing?). Getafix is Vitamix, Unhygienix is Fishstix, Vitalstatistix is Bombastix, Cacofonix is Franksinatrix (never heard of the real person until I found this name), the centurion is named Bossa Nova, the unwilling Roman spy (I’ll call him by the English comic name - Infirmofpurpus) is named Noodles.- Getafix has a stupid voice even when sane.- They decided to add a narrator.- Menhirs are called simply rocks or rockets.- The magic potion is called “vitamin potion”.- The soothsayer is called a fortune teller.- Overall, the dialogue is altered and some silent parts have extra dialogue which isn’t always good. For example, when you see the Roman camp and it’s raining, instead of the silence you hear the dialogue:Optio: Should we go back inside, sir?Centurion: No, let’s stand here, until someone invents the umbrella”- The characters and the narrator occasionally say stupid things (already gave an example).- The Romans speak with Italian accent. Why don’t the Gauls speak with French accent then? Either do both or none at all.- For some reason, the ending credits are German.Jeffrey Kitsch reviewed this cartoon in both English dubs, you can find his reviews on YouTube.
