HUALIAN 18
18 - a kiss as encouragement
“Gege~”
Xie Lian had only looked away for a moment to add more incense blocks to the gilded vessel that sat atop the jaded altar. He’d been sitting with his husband in Qiandeng Temple all day in an attempt to try and improve his unruly writing style but Xie Lian had a sinking suspicion that such efforts might prove to be in vain.
“It’s too hard,” Hua Cheng pouted. His eyebrows furrowed in a way that begged for Xie Lian to smooth the creased skin between them. It was with the greatest restraint that Xie Lian managed to hold back from doing so.
“Which part?” Xie Lian huffed out a breath of laughter and went over to take a peek at Hua Cheng’s work. He bent down, one of his hands moved to rest instinctively against Hua Cheng’s back.
Hua Cheng sighed dramatically as he leaned against his husband. “All of it.”
“San Lang…” Xie Lian didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “You haven’t even written anything.”
“Mn.”
“Why not?”
“What’s the point of writing well when gege is already so good,” Hua Cheng reasoned. He absentmindedly smacked his calligraphy brush against the low table as Xie Lian took a seat next to him.
“San Lang is the one who asked me to teach him. Does he no longer want to learn from me?” Xie Lian took Hua Cheng’s free hand in his own and let his face fall in what he hoped was a convincing show of remorse. By the way Hua Cheng’s eye widened, it must have done the trick.
“No! Of course I do, it’s just…” Hua Cheng put the brush down with a solid clunk. He pressed his lips together, as if trying to decide whether or not to continue, before shaking his head. “Ah, it’s stupid.”
Xie Lian tilted his head. His husband seemed weirdly nervous as opposed to the usual bratty energy he exuded during writing sessions. Xie Lian’s thumb gently stroked the back of Hua Cheng’s hand comfortingly.
“Nothing San Lang has to say is stupid.”
“Gege is just flattering me...which is not unwelcome. Please continue.” Xie Lian fixed him with a serious look and Hua Cheng gave in instantly. “It’s just...can I write something else that’s less important?”
“You don’t want to write our names?”
“I could write my name but gege’s…I’m really not good at calligraphy.”
Ahhh, Xie Lian understood the problem now.
He had thought that Hua Cheng might be more inclined to practice something if he cared about the subject matter...which was why earlier he’d given his husband the task of writing both of their names. Much to his own embarrassment.
It hadn’t occurred to him that it could make Hua Cheng more trepidatious about messing up. He smiled softly and cupped Hua Cheng’s face.
“San Lang is so silly, getting shy now when I’ve already seen his tattoo.”
“That’s different,” Hua Cheng grumbled.
“You’re right. When you did that, you didn’t have someone to hold your hand and guide it in the proper fashion. I’ll help you.”
Hua Cheng still looked anxious so Xie Lian wasted no time in pulling Hua Cheng’s face closer to press a chase kiss to his cold lips.
Then another, and another.
Before long, the kisses deepened and Xie Lian had been lifted with ease onto Hua Cheng’s lap. Hua Cheng’s tongue teased against Xie Lian’s lips…
And then Xie Lian pulled away. Smiling, he gave Hua Cheng’s nose a little boop. “It’s all about technique, you know.”
Still in Hua Cheng’s lap, he twisted around to face the table then grabbed the neglected calligraphy brush and pushed it into Hua Cheng’s hand.
“Gege,” Hua Cheng groaned and dropped his head into the crook of Xie Lian’s shoulder. His arms circled around Xie Lian’s chest. “How am I supposed to concentrate after that?”
“You’ll get more after you’ve practiced,” Xie Lian said matter-of-factly and once more took Hua Cheng’s hand in his own, ready to guide him.
Hua Cheng’s head popped up, eye twinkling. “Gege promises?”
“Yes, yes.” Xie Lian’s cheeks were flushed. He was glad his back was to Hua Cheng or it would be terribly obvious how much he wished to say ‘Screw calligraphy! Practice anything you want on me!’ ...and he would simply never live that down.
“This San Lang will endeavor to be a good student then.”
“I’ll believe it when I see it,” Xie Lian said with the utmost fondness. He began to gently move Hua Cheng’s hand. “Now, let’s start with Hua…”
