$2M Grant to Support Maine Coastal Workers Impacted by Layoffs The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded $2 million to Coastal Counties Workforce Inc. to help more than 1,100 workers affected by widespread layoffs in Maine’s coastal region in 2024. The hardest-hit sectors include food service, manufacturing, and retail, with major layoffs coming from employers like L.L. Bean, onsemi, WEX Inc., and several small businesses. The funding will support employment and training services to aid displaced workers.

US Department of Labor Overtime Changes

This week, the Department of Labor released an Overtime Final Rule that will have significant impact on state disability service delivery systems.  In the I/DD field, the rule will mainly impact compensation for frontline managers who often provide direct services as well, for training purposes or to fill in for the DSPs they supervise.  A brief summary of the rule, and links to a number of DOL fact sheets and the rule itself, can be found at this link on the NASDDDS web site.

Increased Opportunities in Registered Apprenticeship

The U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Office of Apprenticeship (OA) has announced the issuance of the Request for Information (RFI) DOL-ETA-16-N-00035 - Equity Partners to Increase Opportunities in Registered Apprenticeship.  This RFI proposes to reserve approximately $15 million over 3 years (approximately $5 million annually) to award and support multiple contracts to national workforce intermediaries or a national consortia of workforce intermediaries (e.g., Community Based Organizations, Labor-Management Organizations, workforce, industry, and education organizations, among others) to serve as National Partners with DOL, and DOL-approved State Apprenticeship Agencies (SAAs), to support employers, states, DOL grantees, Registered Apprenticeship sponsors, and other stakeholders to promote diversity and inclusion of underrepresented populations that allow them to successfully prepare for, enter, and complete Registered Apprenticeship programs.  Learn more about the Registered Apprenticeship RFI at this link.
