@doriathweek day five | mablung and niënor
M A B L U N G of the heavy hand was a marchwarden of Doriath. He was high in the favor of King Thingol, attending the Mereth Aderthad alongside the king’s son Daeron, and fought also in the Nírnaeth Arnœdiad. Mablung led the Hunting of the Wolf that freed the Silmaril from the belly of Carcaroth and confirmed the right of Beren Erchamion to the hand of Princess Lúthien.
Whilst Túrin son of Húrin dwelt in Doriath, Mablung befriended him and tried to warn him against his own doom. Such efforts failed when Túrin slew the insolent Saeros and fled Menegroth, but Mablung vouched for him before Thingol. When Túrin’s mother Morwen and sister N I Ë N O R arrived in Doriath, Mablung took it upon himself to protect them as he could not Túrin.
Mablung grew fond of Niënor, but he was as unable to keep her safe as he had Túrin. Morwen and Niënor determined to seek out Túrin, and though Mablung accompanied them he was separated from them in the chaos of the Fall of Nargothrond. Niënor fell under the spell of the wyrm Glaurung and though Mablung attempted to save her, she fled from him and was lost to her family’s doom.
Grieving, Mablung spent many years searching for Niënor and Morwen, but when he at last encountered the line of Húrin it was too late: Niënor had cast herself into the waters of the Teiglin, and his words to Túrin of her fate and her true identity spurred him to take his own life.
Mablung returned to Doriath with a heavy heart, rededicating himself to his service to Thingol. He perished in the Battle of the Thousand Caves defending his king and the Nauglamír.

↳ The Silmarillion
« Here ends the SILMARILLION. If it has passed from the high and the beautiful to darkness and ruin, that was of old the fate of Arda Marred; and if any change shall come and the Marring be amended, Manwë and Varda may know; but they have not revealed it, and it is not declared in the dooms of Mandos. »
