Happy Birthday, Usha Uthup: Top 5 Songs by the ‘Queen of Pop’
How to listen to music?
There are very few people in this world who do not enjoy listening to some form of music or the other. It is like a dose for just about every person, no matter in what mood. For some it brings them out of a depressive mood, and for some it helps them remain in the same condition. But the bottom line is everyone listens, but the method of listening is somewhat different for everyone. Listen to music intensely, and you will realize that the sound quality and harmonics vary from one form to another. a) Carrying a portable speaker- This is one that can be started just about anywhere, and is most suitable when you are travelling to open locations out of your city. One doesn’t intend to listen to the harmonics intently here, but simply soak in the mood. You may also party at your friend’s place with it, in which case all you would need is “Dhikchik dhikchik”. For people who listen from such speakers, they ideally would want music just to be in the background.
b) Regular and powerful speakers at home- People who have powerful systems may be called connoisseurs of music. They like the sound of powerful bass falling on their ears, the crystal clear sounds of drum symbals, and guitar riffs moving between different speakers. Yes, they can sit down and relax while getting into the zone called Rhythm.
c) Powerful headphones- Oh, this is the ultimate, if you ask me. There is no technique better than this one to really concentrate on each and every small sound. Every tiny winkle can be heard clearly and it really takes you to a different place for some time, if you ask me. For such people, music is much more than life- it pretty much is life itself. To top it all, powerful headphones help you enjoy the bass, and you will often see such people tapping their limbs to the music unconsciously.
d) Car stereo speakers- Many people install speakers just for powerful “dhikchik dhikchik” sound. However that is not always the case. There is something about music that just makes it such an unbelievable co-driver. While some always prefer to listen to fast music in the car to pump themselves, there are others who love to get into deep thought while listening to slow, meaningful songs (read Jagjit Singh).
One of the most amazing bands, especially if you really want to listen to high quality bass, is Iron Maiden. Their bassist Steve Harris is truly the best in this business, and if one was to reward a musician for his bass rhythms I would give it to him. Metallica is all about rhythm and lead, and less about bass. You might love to hear them on the headphones, but you will definitely not enjoy them on powerful home speakers, simply because they may become too loud at times! Coke Studio India and Coke Studio Pakistan, both use a tremendous variety of instruments in every studio recording. There is no better way than to listen than headphones since you may want to concentrate on every sound. But then if relaxation and creating the mood for a situation is in question then home speakers are perfect. And yes, if you want to create moods for amazing road trips, then start up your car stereo and turn up the volume. Similarly, fabulous subcontinent singers such as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Atif Aslam, Usha Uthup, Arijit Singh, Shreya Goshal, Sonu Nigam and Shaan are to be heard, the two best options are car stereo and headphones. And if you want to dance, nothing better than Michael Jackson on your home system!
