The crowd in the arena grew wilder as the game got more intense with a deuce on the last set. You just entered the audience area of the arena's second floor with a small quiet child on your arms.
Ushijima Wakumi, this is her name. You insisted on naming her after the first syllable of Wakatoshi's name and you would never forget how delighted and flustered he was when you first brought it up.
When she was born into this world, you were sure your life with him would change forever, and so it did. It is tiring, surely, but Wakumi is a sweet and quiet child, more than deserving of all the love, effort and attention you two give her.
For you, she was the perfect mix of you and your husband, blending in your sweet and caring side, and his stoic and quiet nature. While she had her father's eyes and smile, she inherited your nose and hair color.
Your train of thought was disturbed by the almost defeaning noise, which made you worried for her. Fortunately though, she was unbothered, thanks to the earmuffs you made her wear.
"Another service ace for Ushijima Wakatoshi!" you heard the spectator as you took a seat in front, "Ushijima Wakatoshi has been racking up points from set 1 to set 5, what great stamina and power!"
With her earmuffs on, you knew Wakumi wouldn't hear a word so you pointed your finger at the screen, hoping she'd recognize the man featured.
However, she simply looked at you and tilted your head. You chuckled at your silly attempt and you fixed her sitting position on your lap to give her a better view of the game, which she obviously couldn't understand.
"Oh! The last time out, can they break Ushijima's streak now?" another spectator commented.
You noticed Wakatoshi looked up as he walked towards the side of the court for the time out. Uncertain if he spotted you, you secured your hold on Wakumi with your dominant hand, and waved the other with the small banner you prepared.
For some reason, you guessed that he did see you. His lips slightly curved upwards before he averted his gaze back to his teammates. It reminded you of your high school days and the first time you yelled and cheered for him.
"Now, it's Ushijima's serve again. Will we see his fourth no touch service ace?"
The crowd went silent as Wakatoshi started to serve. He was the same as ever, he still had the same cool and intimidating aura in game and it made you recall your past again.
However, your train of thought was disrupted by the loud sound of Wakatoshi's serve. It was so powerful that even the libero had difficulty in bring the ball up properly.
"It's up but definitely in an awkward position, what will they do now?" the spectator spoke.
As the other team struggled to keep up, Wakatoshi was already waiting for his chance to end the game on his favor.
"One touch!" Wakatoshi's teammate yelled.
The game was getting more intense and you noticed how strong the defense is on the opponent's team. You couldn't detect any obvious holes on the other side and you worried for him.
As the setter tossed the ball quickly at the back, obviously to Wakatoshi, you wondered what he'd do about the troublesome defense. As the Wakatoshi came in contact with the ball, he spiked it and it was a powerful blow, directly intended to ironically, the libero.
The power of Wakatoshi's spike was too difficult to handle and the ball bounced away from the libero's arms all the way to the back.
As the sound of the whistle reached your ears, the crowd grew noisier.
"It's a win for Japan!" the spectator exclaimed.
"Ushijima Wakatoshi scores again!"
"Wakumi-chan, did you see that? Did you? Daddy won!" you excitedly told your daughter and pointed at the screen even if she couldn't hear you.
"See?"
You knew you had to go and immediately see Wakatoshi. You wanted to see the shocked look on his face once he sees you. After all, he didn't know you'd come abroad to watch his game.
"Let's go see daddy, Wakumi-chan," you told her as you stepped down from your seat.
Still clinging on you, Wakumi smiled. You carefully went down on the staircase and as you reached the last step, you searched for your ID in your pocket.
"I'm Ushijima Y/N," you told the staff blocking the way and you handed him your TK Sportswear ID. You knew he'd let you pass, TK Sportswear is the main sponsor after all.
Of course, he did let you pass and you entered the first floor, with Wakumi still hugging you. You were in the audience area and a barricade was the only thing keeping you separated from your husband.
It was perfect timing as well, Wakatoshi was near the audience area since he was busy signing for fans.
"Oh," Wakumi mouthed as soon as she saw her father.
"Let's go to daddy," you told her, though she still had earmuffs on.
You walked closer to where Wakatoshi was and Wakumi was getting visibly enthusiastic and excited.
It didn't take long for him to notice his dear daughter longing for him either. He looked at her and suddenly, the look of delight was written all over his face. He approached you and Wakumi was reaching out at him, with her arms raised at his direction.
"Y/N-chan," he called you. The way you addressed each other never changed.
"Toshi-kun," you called him back.
"Wakumi-chan," he also called her name and you let him hold her.
"I didn't know you were really here," he spoke and caressed her hair gently.
"It's a surprise, see?" you told him with a smile.
"I'll meet you outside," you added, "It's impossible to talk properly like this."
"Pa-" Wakumi muttered a syllable.
"Papa?! Our Wakumi will finally say her first word and its papa?" you thought.
You looked at Wakatoshi, who obviously was surprised and hopeful at the same time as well.
"Papa!" she exclaimed.
"My Wakumi said her first word!" you exclaimed amidst the crowd.
"Papa!" she repeated, looking at Wakatoshi's shocked expression.
"Toshi-kun, her first words!"
He stood there, holding her, speechless and frozen. You could tell he was overjoyed.
"I can't believe it," you said and stared at him.
"Me neither," he mumbled, looking at Wakumi. As she continued hugging him, he placed his hand on her small shoulders and leaned closer to embrace her back.
It was another victory for Wakatoshi.
Long after, while he was talking and bidding farewell to his teammates, you sat on the benches on the hallway. You finally removed Wakumi's earmuffs and she was fiddling with her scarf.
"Y/N-chan, let's go," you heard the sound of the door opening and Wakatoshi's usual stoic and monotone voice.
"I'm glad you came here," he continued while he carried Wakumi on his arms.
You stood up and talked, "We were supposed to watch the entire game but the flight got delayed."
"Did you head here straight from the airport?"
"Yes," you answered while walking towards the exit, "Don't worry, I'm not overworking or pushing myself too much."
"Oh, it's even colder now," he noticed as you stepped outside.
"Did you bring Wakumi's gloves?" he asked.
"Of course, I did, Toshi-kun. I even have her favorite beanie," you answered.
"Ah, as expected of my wife."
The two of you stopped walking and he waited for you to get her beanie and gloves from your bag. While he held Wakumi, you put on these for her.
"Are you hungry?" he asked.
"I mean, you just finished 5 sets, Toshi-kun. We really need to eat. Plus I heard that there was a good restaurant nearby."
"Alright, alright, let's eat."
"There's a kiddie meal too, it's perfect for our Wakumi."
"Really?"
"Yes, really."
You walked alongside Wakatoshi and glanced at Wakumi tightly clinging on him. You smiled at the sight of your small family and without a doubt, they are your winter sunshines.
