Demo 4: Guan Dao by Ignatius Yeo

The guan dao is an evolution on the dip pen or the folded pen, also known as a cola pen; the unconventional crude folded pen is largely used for creative calligraphy by European and Middle East artists even to this day.

The folded pen and guan dao may look alike, but that’s where the similarity ends. Through mode switching, Ignatius Yeo has pushed its limits beyond calligraphy and manuscript writing.

In this demo, he will show you how the guan dao can be a pen, brush and even a palette knife with just a flip and change of grip. He will use it to capture a scene with Chinese ink and kopi-o gao, on-location. Those keen to give the guan dao a go are most welcome to do so.

Demo 3: Urban Expression in Colours by Lin Chan

Through her experience, you will learn how to sketch in a way unique to yourself, see what others may not see, be passionate about and aware of your surroundings and express yourself in cooler, form and subject matter.

Demo 2: Ink & Wash by Alice Lim

Love to sketch at a café while waiting for your train in Paris but don’t fancy bringing your 32-colour watercolour palette when you travel? Neither does Alice. So, she travel lights with a pen and a six-colour watercolour palette. In this demo, she will go through the process of capturing details with a pen and show how to mix a rainbow from a limited palette of just six colours.

Demo 1: Sketching Bic by Tony Chua

Watch as Tony uses the humble Bic ballpoint pen to squiggle his amazing linework into gorgeous sketches of his chosen subject matter, be it the chaos of urban life or the quietude of a park.

Ignatius Yeo Singapore

Ignatius Yeo is largely a self-developed visual artist who fell in love with ink-wash approach. He has conducted several Guan Dao Pen workshops and demos since 2014. Notably, at the National Gallery Singapore Opening Celebrations 2015, 6th International Urban Sketchers Symposium 2015 and We Draw Singapore Together 2015.

His artworks (including those created with Guan Dao Pen) are collected by corporations and individuals in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Canada.

He is one of the 4 artists who did the 22m long wall mural in The CentrePoint.

Ignatius Yeo sees himself as a time traveller traversing space-time-space to walk his dot.

His work can be seen on Facebook; he will be conducting Demo 4: Guan Dao Pen during the 10x10 Sketchwalk.
