I did a bunch of different versions of the @rijksmuseum. It’s tricky, figuring out how much to simplify a very complicated building like this. One new thing I tried here: using a grey pen instead of a black one for many of the windows & other features. So they’re still there, just pushed back a bit. From a visit to @zaanseschans, a little village along the Zaan river in Holland that is made up of old windmills and wooden buildings that were brought there as a way of preserving them. Now they’re filled with little craft demonstrations for the tourists -you can watch all kinds of traditional Dutch products being made—cheese, wooden shoes, etc—and there was even a little paint-making mill, although we didn’t really have time to see it. So I was sitting with @thesneakyartist this morning (please go listen to his podcast if you haven’t already! Fabulous in-depth interviews with artists) and I told him that I’m really trying to be very minimal with color and avoid adding that last stroke of color I’m always so tempted to add…and then I got home and added more color.
