After 90 minutes of regulation time, 30 minutes of overtime, and eight rounds of penalty kicks in the rain, Sporting KC, whose performance training is powered by EXOS, won their third U.S. Open Cup title (and second title in four years) against the Philadelphia Union.
“Preparing for U.S. Open Cup games around an already busy regular season schedule and national team duties for players can be challenging,” said EXOS performance specialist Mateus Manoel who serves as the team’s fitness coach. “But the entire organization, from ownership, coaches, and especially the players, was dedicated and focused on bringing the U.S. Open Cup title back to Kansas City, and I’m very proud of the physical and mental toughness our guys showed in winning in penalty kicks on the road.”
This is the third title that Sporting KC has won since 2010 when EXOS began supporting the team with a dedicated performance specialist serving as the team's fitness coach. Sporting KC also won the U.S. Open Cup title in 2012 and the 2013 MLS Cup title, with both titles won in penalty kicks.
EXOS congratulates the players, coaches, management, and especially our team member Mateus Manoel on winning the U.S. Open Cup title, and wishes them the best of luck in the remainder of their MLS season.
