Rewatching the Walking Dead:Caryl Headcanons S2-S3

Headcanons, Character observations and FOR FUN because I’m BORED

-Daryl plays guitar. Sorry. Don’t make the rules. It just is what it is. Merle probably teased him about it but secretly was very impressed. Southern and Classic rock. Lynard Skynard, Guns N Roses etc. He is mortified but also very surprised one day when Carol catches him and sings/knows the song he’s playing.

-Carol is short for Caroline. Named for her grandmother and she hates it. Daryl’s middle name is james. There is a cute lil drabble of this somewhere.

-Carol also has musical skill, having been raised in a Baptist church (where I reckon her parents were prominent figures) she played piano and sung in the choir. She doesn’t have much patience or desire to do so anymore since the only person she sang to wad Sophia.

-Daryl is good with Kids because Merle’s and their daddy’s “girlfriends” often had little ones, maybe he’s got a niece or nephew he was around for a while.

-He probably binge watched the History Channel and read more than he’d ever admit. Could have long, rambling conversations about a lot of “useless knowledge” if anyone ever humored him enough to listen.

-Is good with animals. Probably had a big dumb dog he was attatched to. Was just as prone to picking up and playing with rabbits and squirrels and fawns as he is in eating them.

-Hershel picked Carol to share his med. Knowledge with between S2-3 because she’d somehow on the road, shown that she had a lot of knowledge of DIY fix yourself up kinda stuff. (Like setting shoulders back in place..circa s4.) Probably offered to help fix broken noses or fingers or helped soothe large bruises or something.

-Carol won’t drink. She just won’t. She can’t tolerate the smell of beer or whiskey or anything more than cheap wine. She excuses herself one night when T finds a bottle.

-Daryl hates taking pills. He prides himself on the fact that he grew up in a house full of drugs but has never used them. Ever. He doesn’t like the idea of risking anything becoming habit forming.

-When Daryl gets sick or has a fever he becomes a ridiculously Chatty Cathy and will not shut up.

-Carol gets hurt or sick and she tends to ignore it, push through it, and is one of those people “I don’t need help. I can do it myself.” (I have this angsty thing in my head where maybe something happens that winter before the prison and someone has to help her walk or something because of an injury and she gets really agitated about “not needing help. I’ve always done it by myself.”

Caryl WILL happen on TWD - possible even in 8B?

We’re waiting for the second half of The Walking Dead, and though Carol and Daryl are still growing closer, their relationship is still not romantic canon. After all of the hints, the wishing and the waiting, will it happen? Yes, yes it will. And here’s why it’s taken so long (and why the payoff will be all the more beautiful)...

1. Both Carol and Daryl have a history of being both physically and emotionally abused by the people that were supposed to have loved them. This means that unlike the “normal” couples (Glenn and Maggie/Sasha and Abraham/Rick and Michonne), Carol and Daryl need time to heal and learn to trust before they can begin a romantic relationship with eachother.

2. Leading on from that, both Carol and Daryl needed to be close friends first to show that can both trust and be comfortable around eachother. Between Season 1 and Season 2 we have seen their relationship grow from being strangers to being two damaged people that are starting to understand and care about eachother.  Between Season 3 and Season 4 we see that they have become close friends with occasional flirty moments. Between Season 5 and 6 we have seen a growing intimacy between them, and hope was at its highest for their relationship to become a romantic one. However, in Season 7 it all took step back due to the bad writing/plot changed. However, 7x10 proved to us that Daryl and Carol still have that beautiful, loving bond between them and I’m sure that when they are reunited (and when the neverending “war” finally ends) their relationship will continue from when it was paused by TPTB.

3. Carol and Daryl were also not ready to commit to a romantic relationship with anyone in Season 2 (when the USS Caryl first began its journey). Carol had lost her abusive husband and only daughter, and characterwise was unrecognisable from how she is today. She was weak, afraid and to be honest, a bit pathetic. Now she has grown to become one of the viewer’s favourite characters, with her badass fighting skills juxtaposing her caring nature. Daryl, however, was feral, volatile, and unable to form any kind of friendship with anyone from the group. Now he has grown to become recognised as Rick’s “brother” and a key member of the Alexandria “family”.

4. However, it is important to note that there have been a few plot based setbacks along the way that have slowed down the likelihood of Carol and Daryl’s relationship evolving into a romantic one.

a. Merle’s death at the end of Season 3 heavily affected Daryl as although the two brothers had a complicated relationship, he was his before and after the apocalypse his only family member. Daryl would have needed time to grieve and heal from this before acting on his feelings for Carol.

b. Carol’s banishment in Season 4 not only wedged a gap between her and Daryl physically, but emotionally too. Carol was already feeling wracked with guilt for killing Karen and David, and her banishment would have hightened those feelings, making her feel unworthy of love and support.

c. The death of Lizzie and Mika in The Grove also destroyed Carol emotionally, as not only did she feel responsible for Mika’s death she also had to put Lizzie down which made her question her own humanity. In Season 5A, we saw how heavily affected Carol was by this and how she was in no emotional state to begin a romantic relationship with Daryl.

d. Beth’s death destroyed Daryl emotionally, not because he had any romantic feelings for her (I cannot be bothered to debunk that “ship” in this post) but because he was responsible for looking after her and he believes that he failed her.

e. With points c and d in mind, in Season 5B both Carol and Daryl had suffered major emotional setbacks and needed time to greive and heal before further developing their relationship. 

f. In 6A, despite the safety of Alexandria both Carol and Daryl were still working on their issues. Had things gone differently in 6A (no Saviours) I have no doubt that their relationship would have become romantic in 6B.

g. Unfortunately, the Alexandrian residents became involved with the Saviours which set Carol’s emotional wellbeing even further back. Wracked with guilt, she decided to flee, driving another physical and emotional wedge between her and Daryl.

h. Daryl also had another emotional setback with Glenn’s death (which he feels responsible for) and his imprisonment in The Sanctuary. Like Carol, he needed time to forgive himself.

5. In Season 7B I believe that both Carol and Daryl were both beginning to heal from their emotional wounds, and as we saw in 7x10 they still have such a close, loving bond. However with the “all-out war” consuming EVERYBODIES’ (even us poor viewers) time, Carol and Daryl will not be able to grow together until it is over.

So, with these points taken into consideration, the question on every Caryler’s lips is, “when we will see these two soulmates finally get together?!?!?!”

My answer is soon, but only time will tell. I believe that after the Saviours are beaten, and the survivors set up camp somewhere new (my guess is either Hilltop or the Kingdom), our favourite TWD couple will be reunited for good. I’m predicting a time jump of between 6 months - 1 year, which will give Daryl and Carol time to heal and reconnect. 

There have been a few clues alluding to their relationship going romantic canon (hello Entertainment Weekly, TWD promo photos AND that tweet) and I do believe that Season 8B/9A will be the time that we FINALLY see some Carol and Daryl romance. 

After all, we’ve lost Sasha/Abraham, Glenn AND Eric. The only couple left on the show is Richonne, so it’s about time TPTB gave us another much longed for, much deserved and much hinted about romance!
