USS Newark

If you feel like your state or city has been left out of getting a Navy ship named after it, at least you are not from Newark, New Jersey. They had not one, not two but three ships planned to be named USS Newark and were cancelled with in a 6 year time frame. They were all pretty much the same class of Light Cruiser.

USS Newark (CL-88), Cleveland Class, was cancelled in 1940 due to management and worker issues with the Federal Shipbuilding Co. The Navy had to come in and take over the company.

USS Newark (CL-100), Cleveland Class, was converted and renamed while she under construction to USS San Jacinto (CVL-30), Independence Class light aircraft carrier.

USS Newark (CL-108), Fargo Class (an improved Cleveland Class design so it counts), cancelled when she was about 67% on August 12, 1945. She was used as a target ship and later scrapped.

They did have two other ships named completed commissioned around the turn of the century.

USS Newark (C-1), a protected cruiser and tugboat refitted as a minesweeper for WWI but none have been named since.
