preview:
Despite taking the bus to school, while it was still warm enough, Harry always walked back to Privet Drive. This was after filling his schedule to the brim with after-school activities so he had the excuse to stay out.
Ideally, Harry would've loved to join a sport of some kind. Fall sports started training in the summer, and practices were already held after school. It was the perfect excuse to arrive back late this early in the year. But Harry's dreams of sports had been crushed long ago.
When he was eleven or so, he had attempted to join the schools soccer team. He was too skinny for rugby, too short for basketball, and he didn't have the means for the equipment of other sports like baseball. But, one afternoon while hanging out around the local Goodwill, Harry found a pair of soccer cleats in his exact size. They were a deep maroon color with electric blue stripes and laces. Much too ugly for any sensible child to want, or any struggling parent to indulge. But Harry knew that the cleats would be his.
He saved up every dollar he could, purposefully wandering to places he might find a spare few bills, ignoring the leering glances of older men and walking closely to women he didn't know. Harry even scammed his aunt out of a fiver promising to bring home milk after school when she had mentioned they were out.
After all of his saving, Harry triumphantly bought the old pair of shoes. Brought them proudly to school on the day of tryouts, and a nice older boy even took pity on him, letting Harry use his old set of shin guards.
Harry was small, and skinny, but he could run. Years of being chased by Dudley, and the swiftness of dodging his relatives. Even though he had never kicked a ball in his life, Harry kept up with all of the other boys, and landed himself a spot on the team.
Harry for the life of him could not stop smiling.
