Many tribes spoke their own ancestral language AND Nahuatl for commerce. According to historians, the #Mexica #Aztecs learned Nahuatl when they arrived in the Valley of Mexico because it was the most important language of the region, believed to have been passed down from the #Toltecs.. It was an absolute necessity to understand this language. Nahuatl is a part of the #UtoAztecan language family (#Shoshoni #Pipil #Hopi #Wixarika #Cora #Comanche #Raramuri ..and over 20 others) and there are currently over 1.5 million speakers of Nahuatl.. #Decolonize
