One of the reasons I dislike utopian sci-fi is because it just makes me feel so excluded. Feeling excluded is not always bad; sometimes it’s very powerful and reminds one of their own unimportance. But dystopian fiction tells me “here is a future that people like you could not exist in (or if they did exist, it would be a miserable existence), and this is bad.” Utopian fiction tells me “here is a future that people like you could not exist in (or if they did exist, it would be a miserable existence), and this is good.”
