New Moon in Sagittarius (Uttara Ashada) — Committing to Our Hope, When Passion Becomes Reality!
January 12, 2021
I spent the busier part of the morning drinking coffee and tea — and gulping down my gallon water bottle — while flitting back and forth between children’s Zoom meetings, meal preparations, and scheduling doctors’ appointments.
Somewhere in the midst of it all, like a glimpse of sunlight, I kept finding myself completely excited about today’s new moon. Excited not only because I enjoy writing with the moon transits, but also because, despite what has been a persistently difficult and unbecoming time, there is so much power present to build and firmly establish the lives we desire.
The new moon falls at the end of Sagittarius, bridging into Capricorn. With this positioning, over the next month or so, our minds and hearts will be strongly occupied with analyzing and taking steps toward transforming our inspiration into reality. Sagittarius invites us to explore hope, connect with our gurus, and illuminate the beliefs we choose to embrace.
Capricorn, on the other hand, emphasizes discipline and “walking the talk” — becoming exactly the thing we are passionate about.
Adding to this, the early part of the year brings a very intense emphasis on these matters, as a pile-up of planets conjunct in Capricorn places a spotlight on areas where we may have straddled the fence. In other words, Capricorn is hosting the “house party,” and it’s bringing a serious focus to the things we’ve been hesitating to fully commit to.
As for today’s moon, it transits the constellation of Uttara Ashada, often called “The Universal Star” because it encapsulates the energies of the Vishvadevas — the ten gods who are the sons of Dharma and Vishva, according to the Vishnu Purana. Here, themes center around dharma (truth) and human desire.
Uttara Ashada is translated from Sanskrit as “latter” and “invincible one,” or “later victory.” This is the promise of victory I mentioned earlier — taking our heart’s passion, adding the fuel of disciplined action, and turning it into something we can truly live and experience. I get totally excited just thinking about it!
So, how might this feel?
We may feel a stronger sense of defense around the things we hold dear. Tensions can arise, especially if we find ourselves among people with opposing beliefs or lifestyles.
At the heart of it all stands integrity. Are we truly who we say we are, under all circumstances? Or does our tone, position, or behavior shift depending on the people we engage?
When I speak of consistency here, I mean it in relation to the core of who we are as individuals — not the lighter improvisations necessary for daily interpersonal dialogue. Integrity speaks volumes toward manifestation.
Awareness of subconscious programs and conditioning is crucial, lest we manifest outcomes that leave us at odds with ourselves. Every decision, however, is part of our soul’s path and can be seen as a lesson to strengthen our resolve.
Another important theme is clarity.
We can expect things to become clearer as we commit to choices that honor our values. Will it come with ease? Not necessarily. Much depends on personal alignment, emotional maturity, and growth — how we perceive ourselves, others, and the world around us. This is how hope is brought to life — and yes, it takes work.
Being the first new moon after the winter solstice, this is an excellent time to set intentions for the new year. Begin to activate your voice, bring resolve into areas of fear, and be fully present with yourself. Choose to be in what has been uncomfortable to face. Here, you may find the compassion and love necessary to move forward.
Blessed New Moon and Happy New Year ♥️
