New Moon in Virgo (Uttara Phalguni) — Healing, Renewal, and Union
September 17, 2020
As I sit in reflection over the past thirty days, I’ve witnessed the many ways in which there have been stronger reconnections with our roots and cherished traditions. The last new moon fell in the constellation of Magha, emphasizing personal power, but more importantly, its connection to family lineage. The imprint of our ancestors has been very much at work during this period.
The moon now ushers us into the energy of Virgo, where the strength embodied in Leo is dispersed and delegated outward, bringing forth whatever healing is needed by the Kingdom. We can see the contrast of the great and powerful energy of the King now flowing through the simple, yet potent, modality of the Young Girl — the Goddess in her maiden form, who delivers the necessary remedies for restoration and balance.
The new moon takes place in Uttara Phalguni, the 12th of the 27 constellations, spanning 26°40' Leo to 9°59' Virgo — bridging the two signs. This section of the sky embodies the energy of diplomacy, unions, and contracts. The presiding deity is Aryaman, known as the God of official business and agreements. This constellation has also been called the Star of Marriage, symbolizing the responsibilities and duties required to support the Kingdom or any objective.
The energies in operation now provide abundant fuel to move forward, yet there is also a simultaneous sense of dormancy. The contrast of these modes offers an opportunity to focus deeply on what we are creating in our lives, particularly as it relates to our greater sense of purpose. It is important to remember that these energies aim to heal and correct imbalance. Shifts of power will be felt, along with dispersing energies. Endings will make way for new beginnings — some unfolding suddenly, others more subtly over time.
New moons present the chance for growth in new, improved directions, while full moons highlight where change is needed — where old energies may no longer serve or where fulfillment allows the manifestation of something new. It is striking to watch the synchronistic dance of the moon through the lunar mansions and observe how these themes unfold in our lives and in the world around us.
At this new moon, we are offered the chance to form new unions and collaborate in ways that enrich rather than drain. There is an opportunity to replenish and refresh ourselves. Take note of recent endings and remain receptive to what is emerging. As we enter the season of harvest, coinciding with the autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, the bounty is ripe for gathering, reflecting the seeds we have sown. May this new moon bring prosperity, rejuvenation, and aligned growth!
