Inktober #11
Today’s inktober is Simon’s zoo stuff again. The first time Sven the intern (a troll) met a harpy. They both needed quite a bit of coaxing, to be honest (I mean Rafael’s claws are each half the size of his face! And Rafael just generally thinks new things are murder), but with the help of Uula and some snack mouse bribery they became okay acquaintances!
A little late night Simon’s zoo doodle that was supposed to be super quick portrait of the troll but somehow spawned couple more characters. Whoops. Also accidentally made that sofa too small.
I realized I haven’t drawn the troll properly before (I’ve been thinking of his name, and I think he might be Sven from now on. I also kind of jokingly thought I’d make his last name be something like “Olafssonsson” just for a joke, but I’m kind of growing attached to it). And then Rivers happened (even when she’s making room for her coworkers, she’s still hogging half the sofa) and then Uula decided to butt in. She does that.
I’d like to think they’re having a movie night. The girls are clearly impressed by whatever they’re watching.
Okay, you mentioned Simon's zoo at the most perfect time possible! So I've been trying to get my friend to read about Simon's zoo, since she really happened to like Wurr and the dinosaur project. I finally got her to go through them and she loved it, but she had a question for me: how do periods affect Uula's werewolf-mood-thingy? Is she a wolf or a human during them? I couldn't answer and actually got curious too. I'm sorry if the question is dumb, but we really have no idea.
Periods vary from individual to individual depending on what kind of werewolf you are (and also individually for being different people, because periods).
Uula personally gets them only every other month, but they move around slightly. Usually she prefers them to happen while she's more wolf, as the form bleeds less and is just plain easier, but if she's human while they happen, it's just not worth the effort trying to hold up an off-form while also having your periods. Either is bad enough on its own, she doesn't need to combine the discomfort.
(As a comparison, her adopted aunt, who's a turned werewolf, gets her periods every month with almost clockwork regularity with the moon phase, has them always right before full moon and is all fresh and ready to go wolf* when the moon gets full.)
*(well, her form is less wolf, and more really hairy human with longer face, pointy ears and a wee tuft of a tail, bit it's wolf in spirit!)
“So, uh, Rivers is being a… Snaker than usual today?”
“Don’t know the details, but she was talking to Venla earlier and said something, and now she’s too embarrassed to have a face with expressions.”
Just a quick little tiny snippet I thought of that I decided was worth a quick doodle.
I mentioned long time ago how Uula the werewolf has a pet spider, and I got a request to draw it. Sure, I’d love to, but I need a little help here. I never decided what species said spider is.
(I did consider Poecilotheria metallica, because, you know, Metallica, but apparently that one is endangered and pretty dang expensive too, so I don’t think Uula would have one. Would have been pretty dang pretty though.)
Help, please? What species should Miss Cuddlefluff be? Looking for something common and relatively easy.
Most of Uula’s “nuclear family” (a.k.a. what werewolves count as the minimum of a family). Okay, it should also include Uula’s paternal grandparents, but I ran out of space to draw them. They all count as the same household. (Their pack/extended family basically includes the entire town they live in, which is about 60% werewolf. The rest is people who aren’t/choose not to be/can’t become werewolves themselves, but count as family anyway.)
From left to right: Uula’s adoptive twin brother, Uula herself, her younger sister (they have like fifteen years age gap), their dad, their mom and on the far right their kinda-sorta-adoptive-aunt.
Werewolves are highly social, family oriented people, and as a species, they’re kind of a hot mess. Things started out with there being several different sorts of transforming wolf people, with different alternate forms and slightly varying functions, but as people travelled around and globalization became a thing, they ended up mixing up a lot (”You’re a wolf person? I’m a wolf person! We should get together!” 8D), and nowdays it's hard to say where one breed ends and another begins.
Uula and her biological family are born as werewolves and have very wolf-ish alt form. Her brother is also a born werewolf, but his alt form is bipedal and tailless, and their “aunt” is a turned werewolf with more humany shape (she’s equally hairy as the rest of the family, and wouldn’t need to wear clothes in her alt form, but she prefers them for personal reasons).
The “aunt” was turned as a teenager into a gang of turned werewolves that got started by a rogue. The gang was very strictly hierarchical and lived pretty much by the “alpha male”/dominance display rules (possibly because they had never actually seen actual werewolves before), untill Uula’s grandfather got to know about it and came to have a talk with the gang. Uula’s grandpa has a biker gang made out of werewolves. Mostly rather beefy werewolves. Who are VERY CONCERNED about harmful attitudes about what counts as “living as a werewolf”. Making people anxious by forcing them to constantly worry about their spot in a forced pecking order is NOT in any way part of that. Several “omegas” ended up being rescued, one of which then somehow got herself adopted into a family, and she never left.
