The Artist Who Was too Controversial for the Justice Department - And his Arrival to Madison

John Steuart Curry was born in Dunavant, Kansas in November 14, 1897. He has several famous paintings and is now known as one of the most influential American Regionalist artists. He became the nation’s first artist in residence at the University of Wisconsin Madison from 1936 to 1946. Also in 1936, Curry was commissioned to paint a mural for the Department of Justice. However, his concept was deemed too controversial for the government building. So, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law school Dean at the time, Lloyd K. Garrison (who also happened to be the grandson of famous abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison) helped bring Curry’s vision to the University Law School. Curry completed Freeing of the Slaves in 1942 during residency at Madison. The mural stands in the Law School to this day.

i guess uw-madison was inspired by the shitshow at columbia last night, because there are at least 100 cops moving in on students/the encampment. they've torn down some tents. the had been shoving students and faculty to the ground, but now it seems to be just a standoff.

I want to clearly state that this encampment has been entirely peaceful. The protestors have been nonviolent. This is completely unnecessary.

Mabel Raimey was the first African American woman to graduate from UW-Madison, attend Marquette University Law School, and practice law in Wisconsin.

The profile for Mabel Watson Raimey, the first African American woman to graduate from UW-Madison, is now available on the Wisconsin Women Making History website. 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of this event.

“Hey Der Guy!” Charlie Berens returns to Madison

OH MY GOSH!

Creator of “Manitowoc Minute” and Emmy-Award winning journalist Charlie Berens will be returning back to “Mad-Town” once again for a performance at the Wisconsin Union Theater’s Shannon Hall.

Fun Fact! Charlie Berens is a UW-Madison alumnus. He graduated in 2009 as a Journalism major. As a junior, Charlie started reporting for MTV’s “Choose or Lose.” Since then he’s worked with Fox, CBS Sports Network, and Funny or Die, to name a few.

On the side, he has created a YouTube series that taps into the roots of the unique Wisconsin culture: dairy farming, cold weather, interstate highways, beer breweries, cheese curds, funny Wisconsin town names, Packer fandom, and much more.

With his thick Wisconsin accent and funny colloquialisms, he creates a comedy special in which he reports on local and national news. He has lived in Wisconsin most of his life which makes him an academic and scholar in “Sconnie” culture.
