Rounding out #PrideMonth with the Emily Dickinson tarot deck, inspired by the famously reclusive–and probably bisexual/biromantic–poet.
Tarot cards originated as playing cards in Europe (maybe Italy) in the 15th century. It wasn’t until the 18th century that they became associated with divination and the occult. (See @stuffmomnevertoldyou’s episode, “The Art of Tarot,” for more, & to learn about the queer artist who illustrated the famous “Rider-Waite” deck!) We’re not sure if Emily Dickinson ever came across a tarot deck, but she did live in New England at a time when Spiritualism and mediums were very popular, so, maybe? Dickinson scholars, please weigh in– would Emily Dickinson have been into tarot? I can definitely see Alena Smith's version of her (on Apple TV's Dickinson) doing a reading for Sue… 🌈🔮

Paper or Plastic?
The quesion we hear a little less at grocery stores these days. In that particular area of our lives, the debate seems to have been settled - paper or reusable bags are the superior options.
But the question of paper or plastic seems to be moving beyong the grocery store.
In the Fall/Winter 2018 issue of Ecotone, editor Anna Lena Phillips Bell announced:
"We've moved from sending subscribers mailings in what are known in the industry as polybags - those pesky plastic bags that many magazines and catalogs arrive in - to mailing in recycled-paper envelopes."
A few months later, around June 2019, Poetry magazine followed suit.
However, Poetry didn't use words to announce the change. Instead, the packaging did the talking. Instead of a pesky plastic bag, the month's issue - and all subsequent issues - arrived in a white paper envelope. On the back of the envelope was the above image. The image spells out POETRY with drawings of plastic materials such as plastic flatware, plastic bags, plastic six pack rings, plastic bottles, and more. Next to the image is the phrase "Please recycle this envelope".
Here at UW-Special Collections, we've been curious about the ways Lit Mags have been looking at this in both past and present settings. We're still looking into this. Unfortunately, the packaging in the past was not something anyone thought to save and the arrive of the collection goes through many people before making its way up to us. That said, we've had some luck finding fascinating examples of a few Lit Mags that incorporate the packing into the magazine. More on that in future posts!
Big news, fam: YA GIRL GOT INTO GRADUATE SCHOOL! That’s right: I’ll be starting a three-year MFA program in Design Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in the fall! Design Studies is basically textiles, housed inside UW’s School of Human Ecology. In addition to textiles studios, I’ll also be able to take classes all over campus: art history, history, gender studies, folklore, theater (costumes), literature, OMG I’M SO STOKED. So, yeah! After 10 years in Chicago, I’ll be relocating to Madison at the end of the summer. A few thoughts: 1. I’ve already started putting together a Chicago bucket list and hanging out with YOU is on it! Yes, YOU! There are so many people I know and love in this city; even though I’ll only be a few hours up the road, let’s hang out before I go! 2. One of my big responsibilities before I leave is finding someone to replace me as Textiles Department Director at Lillstreet Art Center. I’m currently working on a job description/posting which should hopefully be up by the end of the week. Are you interested/do you know anyone who would be a good fit? Give them the heads up and keep an eye out for the official posting! 3. I’m now accepting any and all Madison recommendations and resources! Also get rich quick schemes! Who knew Madison was so pricey?!?! 4. And I know this is what you were *really* worried about: YES, I’m going to keep playing hockey! 🏒Madison has a D7 team that’s PRINCESS BRIDE THEMED 🙀 and I’m stoked to join them. HUZZAH! Onwards and upwards to this new chapter of my life! #bignews #lifechange #gradschool #gradschoollife #uwmadison (at Madison, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/fiberistanora/p/BwUvyu6nrqW/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1wlivuhs441fj
Rolling through the lakeshote dorms watering new seed. Hydromulchers make great water tanks if you have no other option. Also pulling it with the tractor is great! #uwmadison #groundzstuff #uwgrounds #hydroseeding
