¡Corrígelo!
For those of us who write in Spanish, I’ve got a suggestion for a typing shortcut/autocorrect that would make things so much easier.
In Spanish when you write a question or an interjection, you are supposed to use the appropriate opening and closing punctuation marks (like I did for the title of this post: which means “Fix it!”).
When I’m typing on my phone, I will switch the keyboard to Spanish (another annoyance for us bilinguals; why should we have to choose? But I digress…) Then I will type away, but normally I won’t bother to put in the correct punctuation because it takes too long. You either have to stop at the beginning of a question, and tap & hold the question mark to get the upside down question mark to start the sentence, type as usual and end the sentence with a question mark. Or WORSE, type out the sentence, add the closing question mark then go back to the start of the sentence to add the opening mark (the upside down question mark). Whew! That is too much work.
But what if the keyboard app was smart enough to do this for you automatically? When you switch to the Spanish keyboard, write out a question, end it with a question mark, then the keyboard app would automatically add the opening mark at the beginning of your sentence. Now THAT would be sweet and pretty darn helpful.
¿Por que no lo hacen?
PS: I also love the idea of having an English/Spanish keyboard so I don’t have to keep switching. But I suspect trying to program autocorrect to work in that situation would be insane. Still, it would be great.
