you should have stayed dead.

Trembling fingers, artifical and cold on one side lift to drag down her face, the tips of them running along scarred flesh before the nails dig in and she feels little more than numbness.
Empty eyes at nothing yet everything.
You should have stayed dead. This is nothing she hasn’t told herself over and over, it’s nothing she hasn’t written in spades on the walls of her room. Sometimes it was ink, other times it was blood when she didn’t have the former. Because if she wrote it enough times then maybe it’d end up true and she’d come to find this was all a nightmare, and she really had died in the explosion that had also heralded the destruction of the reapers.
This, among many other things, bounces around in her head constantly. Voices and clipped images. The screams of the damned she’s certain. The howls of the lives she’s ruined, sacrificed and taken.
It’s so loud.
Shattered to pieces the second time she should have perished, the commander is but a shell of what she was, empty and broken- She should have stayed dead.
It’s too loud.
All the medicine and tubes didn’t leave her aching for anything more than the final end to it all. She was alive for nothing more than the image she represented. The alliance wouldn’t let an investment die when it still had use.
The great commander Shepard was alive! The war had been won!
YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD.
Fingers clasp around her ears and she screams.
“STOP IT!!”
