Why the only felines River enjoys are made of gold or stone

First time River (AKA Mels) saw a pet cat she tried to stone it because her only mental link to such a creature were the rats in the orphanage and the feral alley cats she encountered after she escaped.  Amy was less than pleased with her best friend for the action and quickly reprimanded her.
