The Glowing Beach on Vaadhoo

Vaadhoo island, located in the Maldives, is home to one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. The tide often appears to glow, as if reflecting the night sky perfectly in a romantic blue sparkle. 

What is actually occurring here is the phytoplankton in the water, which are a bioluminescent species of marine microbes. When a large group of them becomes disturbed in some way, they all glow and it becomes very visible due to their large numbers. This more commonly happens out at sea, but this beach in particular is a kind of haven for them in that region, and thus gives us one of the most beautiful sights nature has. If you can't get laid here, you can't get laid anywhere.

The striking blue neon effect is a phenomenon completely natural deep sea, but rarely seen, much less photographed on beaches. The lights are the result of a chemical reaction caused when the waters of the sea rocks, causing some microorganisms (algae dinoflageladas) produce the effect of bioluminescence.
