I still think my favorite thing design-wise about Vaarik is that characters with glasses are usually intelligent. In Vaarik’s case it works opposite, he’s a massive dumbass but his glasses aren’t even the right prescription.
Mental stats are interesting for me to roleplay in dnd because I would consider someone who would equivalently have above average points in all three stats however as a chronic minmaxer I always have at least one of them dumped to a -1, if not two. I like to come up with in-universe reasons for why the characters suck at each particular stat, while allowing my natural skill to shine through.
Six (Int -1) routinely comes up with very crafty and intelligent plans as well as outsmarts most enemies he banters with. Yet despite being a 130+ y old android, he consistently fails history checks and investigation roles. Why? He simply doesn’t care enough to scour through text to find answers, and much like his initial conciousness upload he routinely deletes memories he doesn’t want anymore, leaving the past littered with holes.
Ghost (Cha -1) is outgoing and means well, but their young age and social class render them untrustworthy to npcs, therefore their natural charisma cannot balance out the societal misconceptions about them.
Vaarik (Cha -1) while dorky and likeable to the other PC, is a foreigner in a xenophobic area, not to mention he has a very loud personality which a lot of the locals find offputting.
Copper Jack (Int -1) is very resourceful but prefers to do things his own way rather than relying on books and fancy rules. As a con man it’s easier to make a quick judge of an object and create a new identity for it rather than determine what it actually is (investigation). His mental view of history is also littered with folk tales and exaggerations from the stories he’s acquired across the lands, not to mention his medicine check while technically being +1 is giving someone a shot of hard liquor.
Miki (Int -1, Wis 0) while having read almost every book in the library has no interest in anything besides the world tree. They’re a manix pixie dream warlock, head always in the clouds and not to mention impulsive. They tend not to percieve things because they’re simply not paying attention, and tend to take people at face value (insight). Much like Cooper Jack their history is clouded with folklore and myths.
