Hi Shrink! I have a character who doesn't talk, but she's a minor and she has to hide her identity. What would be some ways she could communicate and express her thoughts to the characters who know about her?

Unless I’m misinterpreting this question, your character can express themselves through any of the following methods:

Writing

Typing / texting

Sign language

Drawing / painting / other kinds of art

Music

Interpretive dance

And no doubt many others.

What disorders could be expected from somebody who went through many wars and has killed people and seen people die? Besides PTSD of course

All sorts of stuff. Some potential disorders off the top of my head include:

Any of the depressive disorders

Many of the anxiety disorders

Acute stress disorder (think PTSD-lite)

Adjustment disorder

Brief psychotic disorder

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but I hope it gets you started!

Often on shows character have (or are said to have) a mental breakdown. While I'm pretty sure the media usually gets this wrong, I wondering if there's a real world equivalent (or equivalents) and what said events are really like. And, specifically for my own story (I'm still on the basic planning stages) what might this person's life and mental health reasonably be like 5-10 years later?

This is too vague for me to answer.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of medications that can be taken for mental illnesses. Each of them has their own side effects.

Look into acute stress disorder and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

How would the near-death of a loved one affect someone with "pretty much under control" PTSD?

There are too many variables here for me to answer this fully, so I’ll just make two generalizations:

1. The death or near-death of a loved one is one of the most stressful life events a character can experience.

2. Extreme stress tends to exacerbate mental illnesses.

Beyond that, it’s up to you to determine what kind of story you want to tell.
