A sneak peak at my entry to this year's Poefest!
“Miss Burton, what have I told you about causing a disruption? No matter, perhaps you can tell me why expressing forgiveness scares off a griefling.” Professor Mackleburn looked pointedly at Val, who blushed.
“A griefling’s main attack is causing you to dissolve into a state of regret and despair, which they then take advantage of. By expressing forgiveness, whether to the griefling or yourself, renders their attack useless.”
“Very much correct. Five points to Fortis. Now, as much as I would like to keep you here the rest of the day-” half of the lecture hall snorted, the other half groaned, “- I do have an announcement to make before the horn. I have spoken with the Council, and the headmaster has agreed to approve this class prematurely for the bi-annual Student Exploration Camping Trip, or SECT.” The lecture hall erupted into cheers, and Professor Mackleburn smacked a ruler on the desk to regain the classroom’s attention. “However! Because it is earlier this year, testing has been moved up by two weeks. Remember: study hard, work hard, live longer.” The horn signaled the end of class, and Professor Mackleburn reminded everyone that homework was due tomorrow before opening the doors. Rowan and Val chattered about the trip while Quinn walked a little ways behind them, lost in thought.
Two weeks passed, and they had just posted the trip groups. Organized by grade percentile, Quinn, Rowan, Reggie, Jessie, and Val were together in a group with one other. The trip would last for a week, and Quinn stood in front of the tram with their bag, staring at the school motto burned into the side. Stude laborare, laborare, vivere diutius. Live longer. A very bad feeling lingered over this trip, and Quinn would’ve loved nothing more than to return to the Etheri dorms and snuggle into their favorite loveseat. Preferably not dying on a field trip. Rowan tapped their shoulder, eagerly signing to Quinn. The security guards were ushering students into the trams, and for once Quinn was incredibly grateful they were deaf. They could see Jessie cringing from what had to be the noise, and they saw Reggie hand her some earplugs, which she took gratefully.
