I do live in Chicago! But, I am not a con person. Haven’t been to one, ever.

Why is there a limit on valerian steel?

My guess- dragons! But seriously I do think that the main reason that there are no more Valerian steel swords being made is because of the disappearance of dragons, and by extension magic. In the show Jamie says that there hasn't been a fresh forged Valerian steel sword since the doom of valantis. It's canon that in old valantis they were totally in control of magic- and there were dragons everywhere! It's also canon that dragon fire burns hotter than pretty much everything, even wild fire which was the reason for creating it in first place. So imagine that in valantis there is plenty of mages and wizards around to experiment with weapon making to try and make the finest sword on earth just because! So after some experiments I imagine they have determined that the hottest fires (which is also magic) stoking the hearth, and magic spells infusing the super heated steel. Now there's a fine blade.
