The Abduction of Europe, Valentin Serov, 1910. Oil on canvas, 71x98 cm, Tretyakov Gallery.
The dashing young man, photographed here in the 1880's, is Russian painter Valentin Serov (1865–1911). He was the son of composer and music critic Alexander Serov (1820–1871) and Valentina Bergman (1846–1924).
Serov grew up in a creative household and went on to study in Paris and Moscow under Ilya Repin (1844–1930), as well as Pavel Chistyakov (1832–1919). He later specialised in portraiture, developing a remarkable ability to capture subtle poses and gestures with striking clarity.
