gustavo took me out to dinner the weekend before valentines day to celebrate the day of love. we went to el gaucho for a fancy steak dinner. we rarely go out all dressed up, bottle of wine, juicy melt in your mouth steak and lobster dinners. so this night was special. we got downtown a bit early to grab a drink to start off our date night. we went to the inn keeper across the street. this place was quite charming and as we glanced at the menu, i was planning when we will be back for dinner here. our reservation was at 8:45, from the inn keeper we walked across the street to el gaucho. the outside of the restaurant was very unassuming. there was a small cowboy head lit up in neon and the name of the restaurant underneath it. but nothing really stood out. i have been by this place many times and never noticed it. but tonight we went in. as soon as we opened the doors to the restaurant it was like we were transported back in time. the place had the vibe of old hollywood. there were people at every table talking the night away, a guy playing the piano on an obscure elevated stage off to the side, the lights were low and the ceiling was high, waiters dressed in tuxes, there was food being carved and cooked and flambéed right at the tables. it was an elegant moment that lingered, it was enough to take it all in. as we walked to our table, i imagined all the people around us were movie stars, our seat was in a cozy corner. we ordered a bottle of wine and steak and lobster for two. our conversation flowed and our night floated along with the ambiance el gaucho offered. it was what valentines and special dates are made of.
