Sketches of Skulduggery Pleasant characters during art class. Design of Nefarian Serpine will come out soon....
Dont think I'll ever be over the fact that really no one gave a shit about Solomons death like he hadnt on multiple occasions been an ally to them all and a mentor to Valkyrie
My thoughts on Hell Breaks Loose spoilers below the cut
I know its early, but I wanted to write down my thoughts before I forget them. So, not really what I was expecting, if you're hoping for a simple retelling of a war story like I was expect to be disappointed. I was actually quite enjoying it until Valkyrie showed up and not really because I dislike her I just wanted this to be about the dead men and Mevolent but it gets so bogged down with the time travel stuff.
It almost feels mean towards the end? Like reading about all the dead men dying wasn't really what I had in mind I was just expecting something else and I think Landy wanted to add some shock factor but after already having gone through the heartbreak of reading about most of these characters dying once it felt unnecessary. You read about all this violence and death, and you expect at the very least it might be worth it since it will have changed the timeline in some significant way and maybe they could've lived but you dont even get that.
I think I would've found it more interesting to see Valkyrie struggle with the desire to warn Ghastly and Anton about the future but also not wanting to disrupt the timeline. Like sure, she scowls at Ravel, but i think if i knew my friend died horribly, I might be more inclined to try and save him.
If you're in this for Mevolent, Baron and Serpine prepare to be disappointed since they barely make an appearance and whilst I'm glad we met Hopeless I still feel like you dont really get a sense for his personality other than hes a good assassin.
Overall, I'd say I enjoyed the first half but felt like the rest just got complicated with all the talk about timelines and time travel rather than just being the simple war story focusing on Mevolents generals and the Dead Men that it could've been instead of another book essentially about Valkyrie.
I do find it interesting that such large portions of the magical community are generally considered evil like vampires, children of the spider, necromancers etc. And any time there's a chance for a character from that discipline whose supposed to be different like Caelan or Mist they end up evil anyhow.
Like Valkyrie chastises Skulduggery for making assumptions about Caelan but he ends up being able to say I told you so but like what does that say about making broad generalisations of a group of people.
