Chapter 1: The New Shop
The shop door opened, sending the bells above it clanging. The shop assistant at the glass counter straightened up from her slouch.
“Hi! Welcome to Cunning Folk Apothecary! How may I assist you?” She chirped. It was early in the day still, and a Tuesday to boot. No one ever showed up on an early Tuesday morning for routine things. The only people who came were usually on the special calendar and usually earmarked for Michelle’s special attention in the back rooms.
The customer who walked in was a boy with the reddest hair Serena had ever seen, and he was already eying one of the nearby bookshelves for cover. Serena smiled, wide enough that she felt her teeth cooling as moisture evaporated from her teeth. The feeling sent crawling discomfort along her spine and a new awareness of her too-dry skin.
The boy took a tentative step towards the counter, eyes flicking from her smile to her eyes and then back to her smile. No, he was looking at her teeth. Perhaps she had gone too wide this time. She tilted her head to the side; a gesture she once saw a woman use to express charming delight and an unspoken question. She had wanted to try it out herself.
“Is Michelle here?” He asked. She let her smile fall by millimeters and watched him shift his weight from one foot to the other. He seemed a smidge too young to require the services of Michelle. Perhaps a friend of Michelle’s son?
“Are you sure you’re looking for Michelle? I can see if Jamie is here?” Serena asked.
“It’s alright, Serena.” She jumped as a hand gripped her shoulder, too unexpected and too firm and too warm.
“He’s a regular. Next time, just let him behind the counter. He knows his way to the back rooms. ” Michelle said behind her. She gave Serena’s shoulder a gentle squeeze before letting go. Serena was not sure if Michelle had meant it to be a reassurance or a mild scolding for her error born of ignorance.
The boy slipped around the counter, sticking close to the opposite wall to avoid her. Yellow-gold eyes locked on hers until he slid through the door to the back. Michelle offered one last smile to her and then followed him, closing the door behind her. ________________________________________________
The smile on Michelle’s face was small, but pleased as Valrun settled on the couch. His expression brightened upon seeing the snacks laid out for him, but he didn’t take anything until Michelle sat herself opposite of him.
“Why’d you hire help?” He asked, taking a bite of his treat. Michelle waved a hand at a nearby teapot shaped like a particularly fat dragon. The spell took hold and it’s small feet pushed it to standing and it waddled over. Michelle poured herself a cup, the liquid coming out of it distinctly not tea and smelling strongly of coffee.
“I’ve found them useful.” Michelle said. Valrun wrinkled his nose at her and her smile grew.
“But she’s weird. She smells weirder.”
“True. She is very young and very new to looking human and living in the city, but I needed the help. I’ve got a handful of projects to complete that need my full attention.” She explained between sips of coffee. “Which is partly why I sent for you.”
“If you’re comfortable with it, I have an errand for you. My friend Nneoma has some artifacts I need and you’re comfortable enough with shadows and travelling through them. What do you say?”
The smile Valrun gave her was answer enough.
@ofdeathandfear
Bit of a try to paint in SAI with Valrun.
Koz, what ever you were planning to do to Val, now is a good time to bail on it.

Got a tiny little sketchbook just for doodling character portraits and stuff. First two sketches are of Valrun and Nightlight!
A while back ofdeathandfear mentioned Val could turn into a floppy eared puppy that would like comfort children or a vicious wolf that ripped people to shreds if they were mean to said children(sry I can't find the link e.e) and I had kinda been wanting to do something like this ever since.
So I decided to test out out stuff on Val, and did a speedpaint of puppy Valrún xP
(thanks to ionahi for wisdom and inspiration <3 and Vet for having such a cute OC c:)
Orders and Introduction
The place smelled like Hell. Brimstone canyons below us bellowed out their raw stench into the night sky, causing my nose to curl back into my face. It was fortunate I'd worn my mask. How the Boar was standing it I did not know.
Mistress War sat on her throne, her fingers drumming beneath her chin. She had no appreciation for the current predicament. Peace had sprung out among the lower European continent. Such a thing was only ever met with her disdain. The Boar's attempt at starting a row against Germany and Italy had fallen remarkably flat. The trouble was, there was no reason for national animosity. Even his assassination of an Italian Princess did nothing.
"Fear is lacking." She said to no one but herself.
I didn't really care. I hadn't left the Morbid Ruin in twenty three days. I'd counted everyone of them with a strike of my blade against my room wall. I wanted the Boar to fail, if only to get myself out of this place. An assassin that sits still too long is no assassin at all.
"We need to reawaken Fear." Mistress War said, again to no one. The way she said the word fear made you think it was a person, not an emotion for which she spoke.
Her hand flicked toward me. The most recognition I've had in weeks.
"You." she whispered, her contemplating smile turning up the corners of her lips. "I have a mission for you. I am sending you to Norway."
I bowed at the waist, receiving the dirty look from the Boar I had expected. Sometimes mother loves me best. Although I couldn't imagine what in Norway would be so important.
