I'm working on the pilot for my animated series Meet the Vampires and currently struggling with the backgrounds and rendering. Things look fine, but something looks off once I add lighting effects. I feel like maybe the background needs to be dialed back, pulled the blacks in to differentiate the characters from the background more. I don't know, I'm more of a character artist than a background artist. Unfortunately, I can't afford a background artist, I'm stuck doing all the art for the pilot solo. Any tips on how to improve the backgrounds would be appreciated.

Valsa Dracule

Valsa is the middle child of king Severus of the underworld. An over-achieving community-oriented woman she's often overlooked by their father. While Severus is known to neglect his kids he barely seems to remember Valsa exists most days. Despite this Valsa has a long history of hosting charity events and volunteer programs. She's the charismatic and beautiful jewel of the underworld. Severus may not see her worth but Valsa's country adores their favorite princess.

Growing up Valsa was always trying to bring peace and unity to her toxic family with little success. She strived to get the best grades, to perform. She can sing, play piano, speak multiple languages. Eventually, she gave up on her relationship with her father, instead funneling that energy into doing everything she could to improve the lives of her community no matter where lives. She helps to raise her baby sister Vatti alongside their brother Clyde who helped raise her.
