Koenigsegg's Freevalve Engine Without Camshafts
Koenigsegg is by far best known for world-beating supercars, but they are also looking into new powertrain innovations.
Koenigsegg has been working for many years on a new engine which could have the potential of a new revolution; this new engine doesn’t use camshafts to open and close the valves. Instead, it uses pneumatic actuators and springs to open and close each valve.
In theory, this would result in a significant increase in horsepower, torque, and fuel economy. So far it’s not taken into production, so we can only wait and see if it really takes off in the future.
