Ford is the one still most under development, so I don't have a ton of his endgame story, but the basics of it is that Dee and Lee are under a bit of a role reversal. Dee is the screwup, born wrong (human, among other things) where Lee was raised as the golden child, firstborn, etc. Brawn over Brains was their Father's concern.
He left home after a fight at 17, going off to find a way to become good enough in their father's eyes.
Vampires, monsters, etc. aren't out in the world in this AU, so he couldn't exactly go to a university to learn more. But he came to a similar conclusion as canon Ford, that Gravity Falls was the epicenter of everything he needed. Or, everyOne.
