I love it.
The racists I know would love tumblr. I know I keep revisting this topic, but it just grinds my gears every time I remember it. And I mean that. The racists I know in real life, the racism that occurs on and off the reservation, would all love the mindset that is on tumblr. And that is the deluded idea that, if it’s bad we can’t talk about it. We have to act like it’s not there. We have to act like it’s not happened, and you know what. that is the entirety of tumblr. We want tv and movies books written in these old times but we don’t want to act like they weren’t horrid for everyone back the who wasn’t English Descent and Christian. They can’t say the bad words despite the time period being a horrid place, and we can’t have the bad treatment on screen because it makes you uncomfortable. Well you know what. It’s the fucking - medieval age, it’s the wild west, it’s the 1960s and so on and so forth. You’re SUPPOSE to be uncomfortable because you know why? It’s an entirely different age, I’d really concerned for you as a person if these topics made you comfortable and you were actually okay with seeing them on the screen. And you why? It’s because you are better than the person committing the horrid act right in front of you. You think it’s bad? Try being the person who experiences it, and then have everyone tell you that you CAN’T talk about it. You aren’t allowed to write about it, you aren’t allowed to explore the dark aspects of your own trauma to cope with it. Because it’s ugly, and we have to pretend it’s not there. THAT’S tumblr. Well guess what that’s racism. And people who gatekeep these topics especially those of their own culture, are giving those racists exactly what they want and making sure that the dark things are never known and it all disappears into the background, shoved away out of sight and forgotten. My mother was called names before, I was called names before, everyone I know was called names before. And harassed and attacked and made uncomfortable. Our children are still yelled at for going to a sports game off the reserve. Am I going to hc my native american muse to go through the same thing? FUCK YES. And to tumblr, I say, try again to tell me I can’t.
There is nothing wrong with writing a native american character as angry, or basing themselves out of their anger. Because you know what? We’re all fucking angry in some way. It’s so shitty what happened to us, and what is happening to us in the canons that we have. And in some cultures, like my own - and the one for example that is based in RDR - it is our ways to be what we call warriors. Fighters. And you know what? That is exactly how I write my native american muse. He has a temper, he is hot headed, he will puff up if someone looks at him wrong, while also balancing a gentler side to those he’s close to. There’s nothing wrong with letting your POC muse get angry. Cause otherwise? Tumblr is telling me that it’s okay for a non-poc muse to go into a bloody rage after being wronged, but it’s suddenly not okay for a poc muse to do it? no. fuck that. We have tempers too.
People. Need. To. Stop. Taking. Negative character development in canons against their muses, as personal attacks. If my muse gets mad at another character in canon, it doesn’t mean that right now, we as PEOPLE in REAL LIFE are going to have that same dynamic. I shouldn’t have to say this, but this is a reoccurring factor that I see again and again. I LOVE negative character development, give me all of it, I’m not going to take it as a personal attack. And other’s shouldn’t assume I’m gonna come after them.
The one subject of people I am still seeing neglected in terms of treatment is the general terms of motherhood and the way a parent grieves when losing a child. The pain of losing a child is considered to be one of the worst things that can happen to a child, that it shakes them to their core so bad that they can lash out and come out the other end a completely different person. For all the years I’ve been on tumblr, I’ve yet to see Tumblr chill on this subject.
There are two things that people struggle with when it comes to writing, I see it all the time. And that is 1) A confident man, and 2) an angry woman. I’ve no idea why this is such a hard issue I’ve seen come across where 2, is usually over done and hates and abuses everyone, or 1, ‘isn’t actually confident it’s just a façade for some turmoil’ or whatever. (see. Jaime Lannister, or Dorian Pavus, or Logan Delos). Like no. these men are confident, it’s not a front. Just as well as the women in this topic aren’t the spawn of hell (see. Cersei Lannister, Dolores Abernathy.) Men are allowed to be confident as much as women are allowed to be angry.
Murder is still a crime. Just as much as anything and everything else. People forget that when it comes to things. My muses? Are mostly murderers., and yes that means my Native American muse, he’s a killer. Just as well as Leliana is, Dolores Abernathy. They’re all fucking killers. They’ve murdered, and that is still bad. This shouldn’t have to be said but alas, here I am.
