Occasionally we like to write about startups and established companies with intriguing stories. We also like to share great experiences we've had with other businesses. This post contains both a great story and a startup turned established company.
Recently I went into a Van Bortel dealership to check out the Subaru Legacy. Checking online, I found that Van Bortel Subaru was the closest dealership with a very interesting and compelling story.
Kitty Van Bortel was fired from her managing position at a BMW dealership where she was driving the newest model "beemer" every summer. Instead of working for another dealership, she established her own at the age of 31 with $500 in cash. Eventually she was selling 40-50 used cars per month—from her front yard!
Now she runs the top Subaru dealership in the country and it's obvious why. They do things different and casually. It doesn't feel like a car dealership. Within 5 minutes I was test-driving a car. They didn't make a photocopy of my license or even ask for my last name. They told me to go wherever and for however long I want. I have never been to a dealership where they trust you .
There seems to be a few keys to the success of the dealership, which sells double the number of cars than any other.
The sales people are kindhearted and aren't even the slightest bit pushy.
They encourage you to take your time when making a decision understanding that people want to talk to a spouse, parent, or friend about spending tens of thousands of dollars. Most dealerships want to do it in the same day you walk in.
The experience is top-notch and they welcome you open-heartedly.
They drive Subarus every day. I can't tell you the amount of dealerships I go into where the employees don't even drive the brand they are trying to sell!
They don't negotiate. Their price is below MSRP and they disclose what they make on each deal. Try asking that anywhere else without being shoved out the door.
Everything is laid out for you on paper. There's a sheet of every option, accessory, and trim level with the suggested price and the Van Bortel price.
Van Bortel Subaru is currently the number two Subaru dealership in the United States. They sell cars the same way they'd like to buy them. They cut the dog and pony show, warmly welcome anyone into the dealership, and encourage you to take your time because they know that not everyone is comfortable spending twenty some thousand dollars without talking to others. The experience of Van Bortel Subaru is one of a kind even if you're not buying a car.
